TODAY IS THE LAST DAY! Our Halloween Dog Photo Contest ends at 5pm today so get those photos it. The photos this year are so adorable and the prizes are fantastic.

Between decorations, noisy trick-or-treaters, random candy, spooky sounds, and the front door opening and closing all night, Halloween can be a challenging night for some dogs. It's also a night many pets get lost or go the emergency vet office so here are some safety tips for keeping the holiday enjoyable for your dog.

-Keep your dog away from the door. Many dogs escape when the door is constantly opened. Try having them on leash, behind a gate, or in a separate but extra cozy space in a different room. 🚪

-White noise like a box fan (not pointed at your dog) can help disrupt the sound of scary movies and kids at the door.

-Take a long walk, play movement games, or enjoy some backyard agility to help your dog relax more in the evening. 🍂

-Talk to your vet about calming treats or other strategies if your dog struggles during the holiday.

-Candy wrappers, candies with chocolate, raisins, xylitol, gum, decorations, glow sticks, and costume buttons can send your dog to the vet. If you can't get a hold of your vetrinarian, contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center Phone Number at (888)426-4435 or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855)764-7661. 🍬

One reason we created this contest 3 years ago, is that unlike other organizations hosting pet contests, our contest includes a category for no costume. Why? Because as experts in dog well-being and behavior, we know not all dogs like wearing clothes. If your pup is unhappy or uncomfortable in outfits or gear, how can you tell? Here are some of the signs.

-Licking their nose or lips
-Yawning without being tired
-Turning their head/body away
-Trying to walk away from the situation
-Shaking off more than normal
-Whale eye or side eye
-Mouth closed tight
-Freezing
-Dilated pupils
-Raised foreleg
-Rolling around trying to get free
-Pull at the costume with their teeth or paws
-Tail is turned down or between their legs

If you really want your dog to wear something spooky but they hate wearing stuff, try a Halloween themed bandana, harness, or collar and leash. Another option is taking a photo of your dog at a pumpkin patch, in a pile of golden leaves, or in front of a Halloween display.

Our no costume category is a fun but important reminder that dogs deserve to have a say in what goes on their bodies. Let's celebrate their communication with a creative photo in a beautiful fall or spooky setting. 🍂🎃❤📸

Our final prize partner and contest judge is a business that has supported this contest since we began it 3 years ago. The Studio Pendleton LLC is a family orientated space that fosters creativity, exploration, and taking time to relax. Cerebella W**ery at 30 SW Emigrant Avenue is a new prize provider and judge for our Halloween Dog Photo Contest this year and we're thrilled. W**emaker and owner, Robb Zimmel began his w**e journey many years ago when the women in his family created w**e from fruits like rhubarb or chokecherries. After serving as a combat medic, he invested in his own well-being by going to Washinton State University to learn w**emaking.

Robb along with his General manager Michelle Metcalf have made Cerebella into an inviting destination where everyone is welcome in the beautiful space. In addition to award winning beautiful w**es, Cerebella also has an enticing food menu and options for every diet. They also host w**emaker's dinners featuring high-quality local ingredients.

The w**ery has a robust w**e club and on Wednesdays you can get a glass of w**e for half off. The team loves dogs and this year hosted a Pendleton Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS) / Pioneer Humane Society event, as well as hosted our own Whine and W**e event where dog guardians explored what it means to thrive with dogs.
