Drought Defense

🐷 Hot dry weather and pigs are not a good combination β€” here's how to keep yours safe!

Of all your farm animals pigs may be the most vulnerable to heat and drought conditions. They physically cannot sweat and rely entirely on external cooling to regulate their body temperature.

Here's what to do:
πŸ’§ Fresh water constantly β€” no exceptions β€” pigs will go completely off feed if they don't have enough water. In hot weather they need significantly more than normal. Check and refill multiple times a day
🌊 They must have a way to cool down β€” pigs need a wallow, a mist system, or to be sprayed down with water during peak heat hours. Without it heat stress sets in fast and can be fatal. A simple muddy wallow does the job β€” the mud insulates and cools
β˜€οΈ Sunburn is real β€” especially on light colored or pink pigs. Shade is essential and a good mud wallow also provides sun protection
🍽️ Feed during the cool parts of the day β€” early morning and evening are ideal. Digestion generates body heat so feeding during peak heat makes things worse
🌑️ Know the signs of heat stroke β€” rapid breathing, muscle tremors, weakness, and collapse are emergencies. Get them cooled down immediately with cool (not ice cold) water
πŸ‘₯ Give them space β€” overcrowding in hot weather means more body heat in the pen. If you can reduce stocking density during extreme heat do it

What we carry to help:
βœ… Hog feed & supplements
βœ… Fly control products
βœ… Salt & minerals
βœ… Feeders & waterers

Your pigs are counting on you to keep them cool this summer β€” come see us if you need anything! 🐷

Drought Defense

🐐For your goats β€” don't let the dry weather sneak up on you!

Goats are tough but they're not invincible. Hot dry conditions affect their health, their weight, and their production more than most people expect.

Here's what to watch for:
πŸ’§ Water intake goes way up in heat β€” goats can drink up to 4 gallons per day in hot weather. Make sure clean fresh water is always available and check it multiple times a day
πŸ§‚ Loose minerals are critical during drought β€” drought stressed forage loses mineral content fast. A quality loose goat mineral keeps your herd from developing deficiencies that affect health and production. Note β€” goats need goat-specific minerals, not sheep minerals!
🌾 Supplement with quality hay β€” when pastures dry up and get sparse don't let your goats lose body condition. Good quality hay fills the gap and keeps them where they need to be
⚠️ Watch for nitrate toxicity β€” drought stressed plants can accumulate dangerous nitrate levels. If you're letting goats graze dry stressed pastures be aware of the risk
πŸͺ° Parasite pressure increases in heat β€” check your FAMACHA scores regularly and stay on top of your deworming program. Stressed goats are more vulnerable to worm loads
πŸ‘£ Check hooves more often β€” dry hard ground can cause hoof issues. Stay ahead of it with regular trimming

What we carry to help:
βœ… Goat loose minerals & mineral blocks
βœ… Quality hay β€” call ahead for availability
βœ… Goat feed & supplements
βœ… Fly & parasite control products

Come in and talk to us β€” we're happy to help you build a drought plan for your herd! 🐐

Drought Defense

🌾 Dry conditions put real stress on your herd and it's important to stay ahead of it before problems start.

Here are some things to watch for and what you can do:
πŸ’§ Water is everything β€” cattle need 2–3x more water in heat and drought conditions. Check your water sources daily and make sure they're clean and full at all times
🌿 Supplement your forage β€” when pastures dry up and quality drops your cattle aren't getting the nutrition they need from grazing alone. Supplemental hay and feed become essential
πŸ§‚ Keep minerals available β€” drought stressed forage is lower in key minerals. A good loose mineral or mineral block keeps your herd from falling short
βš–οΈ Watch body condition β€” cattle losing weight during drought are burning reserves they'll struggle to recover. Don't wait until they look bad to act
πŸͺ° Fly and parasite control β€” stressed cattle are more vulnerable. Stay on top of fly control and check your deworming schedule

What we carry to help:
βœ… Hay β€” call ahead to check availability
βœ… Cattle feed & supplements
βœ… Loose minerals & mineral blocks
βœ… Fly control products
βœ… Protein Tubs
βœ… Salt blocks

Don't wait until your herd is in trouble β€” come see us and let's talk through what you need. πŸ„

🌑️ Drought Defense - For Your Animals

πŸ” Keeping your flock healthy during hot dry weather β€” here's what you need to know! Chickens feel the heat and drought more than most people realize. Heat stress can cause them to stop laying, get sick, or worse.

Here's how to keep them thriving:
πŸ’§ Fresh cool water β€” multiple times a day β€” chickens will drink significantly more in hot weather and will stop laying if they get even slightly dehydrated. Check and refill waterers frequently and keep them in the shade so water stays cooler
⚑ Add electrolytes to their water β€” just like us chickens lose electrolytes in the heat. A simple electrolyte supplement in their water helps them stay strong and keep laying
🌑️ Watch for heat stress β€” signs include panting, wings held away from the body, and lethargy. If you see this act fast with cool water and shade
🌿 Lay off the scratch in extreme heat β€” scratch grains generate body heat during digestion and can make heat stress worse. Stick to regular feed during the hottest days
πŸ₯¬ Frozen treats help β€” freeze watermelon, berries, or even just ice in their water. It keeps them cool and hydrated and they love it
☁️ Shade is non-negotiable β€” make sure your flock has access to shade throughout the entire day as the sun moves

What we carry to help:
βœ… Poultry electrolytes & vitamins
βœ… Quality layer feed
βœ… Poultry waterers
βœ… Fly control for the coop

Keep your flock happy and laying all summer long β€” come see us if you have questions! πŸ”

Georgia is dry, y'all. Real dry. 🌾

Our farmers are watching their fields, our gardeners are watching their plants, and all of us are watching the sky. We'd sure appreciate you lifting up a prayer for some good, soaking rain across our state.

We're all in this together β€” and we've seen what happens when a community comes together and asks. πŸ™
