Caution! Far too many pets have been harmed by unqualified and unaccountable sitters, and now another local tragedy is being widely reported. (See photo) The holidays are approaching and many of you are getting your travel plans in place, so let’s make sure to protect our precious pets.

Our area has a number of wonderful, professional pet sitters to choose from. Please, don’t risk your pet’s safety with non-professionals.

When you are seeking a pet sitter, please know that many of the posts you see on social media promoting such services are from well-meaning, pet-loving people, but not professionals… including many on Rover and Wag.

And, especially around holidays and summertime, some could be short-term opportunists who bear no accountability for their actions and have no commitment to our community. Unfortunately, testimonials and reviews can be easily faked.

Just because a service has a “business name,” that doesn’t mean they are a long-established or legal business. I urge you to ALWAYS research and hire a professional… insured, bonded, registered business, certified in emergency care, widely experienced, and a true long-term partner in your pet's care.

My business, Pup-Eez, is our immediate area's longest-serving professional pet sitting business, established in 2004. I am always happy to offer guidance at no charge, and with no obligation to use my services. I firmly believe that what any sitter does reflects on our entire industry, and I want your experience to be positive, whether it's with me or another top professional. Let’s keep our pets safe together 🩵🐾

What's really happening to your pet's veterinary care? Huge private equity companies have all but taken over the pet food market, and for several years now, they've been buying up veterinary clinics at an alarming rate. Prices are out of control.

Be prepared by researching in advance.

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month.

July 4th and the days surrounding it are the busiest days of the year for animal shelters taking in lost pets.

It is estimated that only 3% of lost pets who wind up in shelters return home, and only 17% of missing dogs somehow make it home at all.

In addition to microchipping and registering your pets, please make sure they wear a collar tagged with your phone number at all times, even when they are just inside your house. There are so many ways they can slip out, especially during busy or hectic moments. Exterior doors that open outward are great during a hurricane, but not great for keeping pets safe.

Please see the picture for more suggestions to keep your dog safe and comfortable on and around July 4th. ❤️

Isn't it awful when you take your dog out for a walk and suddenly discover his underside covered with green stickers? Those stickers come from a w**d called Creeping Beggarw**d (desmodium incanum).

Here are some photos to help you identify it. Florida beggarw**d can be both upright and low-spreading, especially when it's mowed or growing among grass. When beggarw**d is mowed regularly, it sprawls close to the ground and blends right into the grass, making it hard to spot until the sticky pods attach.

Beggarw**d is not known to be toxic to dogs. However, it's not wise to allow your pup to pick at the pods himself. They could clump together and become a choking hazard or become irritating to his digestive system. You should remove them right away.

To remove:
-Lightly sprinkle cornstarch on the affected areas to help loosen the pods and reduce pulling.

-Gently pick out larger pods. Use your fingers to remove what you can by hand. Hold the fur close to the skin to prevent tugging.

-Then, use a wide-tooth pet comb to gently ease out the remaining pods.

-Use a slicker brush for finer removal once most debris is gone. Always brush with the direction of hair growth.

-For very tangled or pod-packed areas, carefully cut out clumps with blunt-tipped scissors. Be extremely cautious near the skin.

-Wash the area to remove any remaining sap.

If beggarw**d is in your own yard, there are products you can use to eliminate it (see photos). Always check the label to confirm it's made for use on the type of grass you have.

One of these pups unwittingly started a house fire by biting into an electronic device left within his reach.

People always say, "My dog has never even shown any interest." Well, that can certainly be true... until the day they finally do. 🐾

Please keep your dog away from Florida's lakes, canals, lagoons, and other bodies of water, which are also home to deadly snakes like water moccasins. You will not see them coming. Walk your dog on sidewalks and cleared property away from the water. Safety first! 🐾

Note... the Everglades themselves are home to only about 15% of Florida's alligators.
