HillTop Kennels

HillTop Kennels We are a family owned and operated canine training and boarding facility located in Pell City Alabama. Please contact us with any questions.

HillTop Kennels, LLC, is owned and operated by Josh and Mallory Guthrie. We offer short to long term boarding and dog training ranging from basic obedience up to advanced training covering a variety of principles. Mallory graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Zoology with minors in Psychology and Criminology. She worked for Auburn University's Vet School training dogs for research proj

ects while attending the university. Upon graduating from Auburn, Mallory worked for PetSmart as head dog trainer for three years. Mallory then went back to work for Auburn University in Anniston, AL at their Canine Detection Training Center where she was employed as a Canine Instructor II for 3 years before Josh and Mallory started a family and decided to open their own business here in Pell City. Mallory's educational and work experience have provided her the ability to train dogs with even the most challenging behavioral problems. We know one of the main reasons dogs end up in shelters is due to behavioral issues that can often be fixed with just a few weeks of training. We are committed to providing excellent service resulting in well behaved pets that are a joy to have as a part of your family. We are fairly priced and offer a wide variety of services.

Everyone needs their own space every now and then, even your dog. The “place” command tells your dog to go to his space until further notice. He can sit, stand, lay down or walk in circles, it doesn’t matter as long as he doesn’t leave his space. This is a perfect command to use when you are cooking, eating, and answering the door, to name a few. Willow is doing good with “place!”

“Leave it” can be a life saving command. You can prevent your dog from picking up something dangerous. It is also useful because you can use it for anything you want your dog to stop paying attention to. For example; leave that chicken, cat, squirrel, person, car, food, other dog, child’s toy etc. Also at the beginning of the video she listened to “sit” instead of running over to the kids playing next to us. Good job Willow!

Good job Willow! Notice she’s not barking at me 😊

Willow is learning that she doesn’t bark to get her way. Here is what she’s doing when I tell her something. I choose to ignore her because the more I interact with her the more she barks. Stay tuned for her progress on not barking!

Pepsi did great with her training! We will miss her but we know she’s happy to be home! (She does a great job here correcting herself)

Walking your dog is good exercise for you and him but it’s no fun if he’s dragging you, choking himself or refusing to walk. With loose leash walking it is okay for your dog to walk out in front but it’s not okay for him to pull. This way he can have fun sniffing and exploring instead of being stuck by your side like in heel (there is a time for this command!). Before training Pepsi was jerking on the leash and pulling me around. She was pulling so hard she was chocking herself. She is doing much better. Great job Pepsi!
