Reason for Admission: Neuroinvasive West Nile Virus with Poliomyelitis
On July 20th, 2025, Mykel was brought to the Emergency Room due to sudden onset weakness in both his upper and lower extremities, accompanied by high fever. Within days, he experienced significant functional decline, losing the ability to walk or care for himself. Initially, he was diagnosed with idiopathic transverse myelitis, though the underlying cause was unclear. After 10 days of hospitalization, Mykel received a rare diagnosis: Neuroinvasive West Nile Virus presenting with polio-like symptoms, specifically poliomyelitis. Just prior to his anticipated discharge, he developed a bloodstream infection, requiring an additional 4-day hospital stay.
Following a total of 15 days in the hospital, Mykel was transferred to PAM for intensive rehabilitation, including physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech therapy (ST). During his 17 days of inpatient rehabilitation, Mykel made remarkable progress. Within the first week, he regained the ability to stand and ambulate with assistance and a walker. His cognitive function also returned to baseline.
The dedication and expertise of the therapy staff played a critical role in Mykel’s recovery. Their commitment to restoring his independence allowed him to safely return home after 4½ weeks of hospitalization and rehab. He is welcomed home by his wife and dogs and is eager to resume his favorite activities, including hunting, fishing, and dog activities.
One moment that stood out during Mykel’s rehab journey came from his physical therapist, Jake, who shared a quote that reshaped Mykel’s mindset and fueled his determination to recover:
“Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford
Mykel is deeply grateful to his wife, family, friends, and the incredible medical and rehabilitation staff. He acknowledges that he could not have made it through without their support, encouragement, and care.
