Hamor Hollow Hedgehogs USDA-Licensed Breeder and Rescue — Conveniently Located in Central New England! Want to meet some hedgehogs? So we decided to become a breeder ourselves!

Committed hedgehog breeding and rescue serving New England since 2003. Schedule a visit to come play with and learn about hedgehogs! Just 45 minutes North of Boston or 35 minutes South of Manchester! As a husband and wife team, we coincidentally both had hedgies in our lives since 1995. After we got married in 1998 and our first pet store hedgies passed away, we had trouble finding a local reputable breeder.

I STOLE MAUVE'S BABIES!!!!!! Usually at around 2 weeks or so (or slightly less in this case) the mom will start leaving the nest to nap away from her little ni**le leeches. This is when I get to have some fun and start stealing away the babies. They aren't terribly exciting quite yet, but soon they will start roaming and exploring their environment.

Please enjoy this video of Mauve's babies doing absolutely nothing.

This is Tanya's litter, born 2/28/25.She is an experienced mom and pretty relaxed, so I am able to take quick peeks to get short videos. If she was huffing and upset, which is pretty typical for a first time mom (or really most moms), then I would not be peeking into the nests. If you are a hedgehog breeder and not super familiar with your moms and raising litters, STAY OUT OF THE NESTS! Seriously, I have been breeding hedgehogs for over 20 years and I know what I can get away with and when to back away.
If you've been following my baby posts, I am sure you realize that you are seeing the same litters over and over and you haven't seen others either at all or very much. I talk about Lucy and Peanut's litters but haven't shown them much because they are both first time moms and they are more protective of their babies. I posted a cute video yesterday of Peanut sticking her nose out of the nest, but I did not bother the babies.
My moms are highly social and very used to me. I do not let others go into the hedgehog room because new smells and sounds can scare the moms and there is always a possibility that mom will freak out and kill the litter. Once the babies are around 2.5 weeks old, there is much less of a chance of this happening. They also open their eyes around 2.5 weeks and start looking and acting like little hedgehogs.

I promised to try to post another video today, so here is SugarPlum with her litter.

Momma video - Peanut was being super cute when I was checking the cages today. I have her in a 2 part hut because she was having trouble keeping all of her babies together. I did not open the hut to check the babies, so it is only Peanut in the video.
All moms and babies are doing great, all the babies were in their huts with their moms. I will try to get another video later today if someone is relaxed enough for me to check their hut.

I had a busy weekend, and I have no idea how to backdate posts, so here is what I wanted to schedule for Sunday:
All of the moms are getting some extra supplements. I am adding a little bit of pedialyte to their water to keep them hydrated and every few days they get some Carnivore care in a little bowl to hopefully help with their energy and milk production. They only get the Carnivore Care every few days because too much can cause diarrhea and super funky colored poops (light blue...... that's way too weird!).

No New litters today, all babies are in the nests and are hopefully doing fine. I'm not peeking into the nests and letting the moms do their thing, but I haven't heard any baby cries, so that is really good (or a total annihilation, but I haven't seen anything to make me think that things aren't going well). I might try to peek into a few more nests later today after I clean my group and boy cages. Mom cages won't get a clean till babies are at least 2 weeks old, so if any cages look dirty in the pics or videos, it is for the safety of the babies).
For today, enjoy this video of Mauve and her 4 babies, born on 2/23/25 (Our oldest littler). Mauve was relaxed and I was able to s*x the babies. There are 3 boys and 1 girl. They are not available to reserve at this age.

2/28 Update: 2 more litters were born today. Mable (Mauve's first litter) has her babies and is feeding them. I don't know how many, but she was very relaxed about it. Big Fat Tanya popped out a full herd of her own. I got a quick photo but couldn't count. There are more than in the photo, but I would be happiest if she only has 4 or 5. More than that can be difficult to feed, although Tanya looks big and is hopefully full of milk. (Tanya 1st pic, Mable 2nd pic)

Lucy had a baby the was out of the nest, and she only yelled at me a little when I put it back. Then she left the nest to get a drink, so I snapped a pic of her litter (Pics 3,4,5). Dime for reference on baby size. That's our little wondering baby!

We now have 6 total moms, but we don't count the total babies for another few weeks because it is bad luck. I've been very lucky so far and my moms have been super good about letting me peek in the huts. I peek in every day for a week or so before they give birth to get them used to me looking and so they know I won't harm them. Lots of handling time and having the hedgehogs used to me and very friendly helps a lot with being able to check the huts. If you are not super familiar with a mom before she has babies or if she is being aggressively protective, you have to stay away or she will destroy the litter. We've been training for moments like this!

At morning check, I found 3 of Lucy’s babies out of the nest. I pushed them back in and also noticed that she had more babies in the nest. There could be 6 in there, but she was huffing and I didn’t want to upset her anymore. At noon check, she was under her hut with all her babies.
Below is a photo of Mauve’s babies from last night. Mauve was out of the nest to eat and drink, so I took a quick peek. She covered her babies so they would be hidden while she was out. She is being a great mom. There are actually 4 babies hidden in that pile!

Lucy has a very new baby that I found when I checked at afternoon check. I only saw one, but it’s possible that I didn’t see them all or that she is still in the middle of birthing them. She is being very protective which is great.
Peanut had 2 babies crawl out of her nest and seemed like she didn’t know what to do. I saw the first baby right away and put it back into the nest, but then peanut was still running around like a crazy little Hedgehog not knowing what to do. So I looked and I found another baby that was out of the nest. I gave her a new hut to keep her and her babies in a little better than the other one, But she still ran around for a while, being nervous. I had to leave her for a little while because I had an appointment, but when I came back and checked, all the babies were in the nest, and Mom was in there too.
The photos are peanuts babies. The one by itself was the first one that I found out of the nest.

SugarPlum Has babies! I could see 2 babies feeding when I peeked this afternoon. Sugar is a first time momma. She seems pretty relaxed, but I did not peek long enough for a photo. I did not see the babies when I checked this AM, but since they are actively feeding already I think she may have been hiding them. One of Peanut's babies was out of the nest this AM, but I popped her back in and she is still in there (that's a good sign that she just crawled out and not that mom rejected her and tossed her out). Total litters = 3 (so far) Total babies = NEVER COUNT THE TOTAL, it is very bad luck!
Kitty photo because my babies were being cute!

Mauve has babies. I think I saw 4 in the nest. I discovered them last night at bed check, but I think she's been hiding them for a day since they are bigger than Peanut Hamper's babies. Mauve is an experienced mom and is more relaxed with her babies, so I felt comfortable enough to get a photo. You can tell they are older because they are bigger and darker than Peanut's babies.
Both hedgehog pairings have a lot of dark in their lines, but babies generally start out pretty pink and usually take awhile before they start to color up. If there is Cinnacot or Albino back further in Peanut's lines, we may see some cotty or albino babies but we won't know for sure for a week or two.
I was able to peek into both nests quickly this AM and both moms have their babies under them. I got a quick glimpse of Peanut's babies, so I know she is caring for them. Mauve's babies are pretty big and were poking out from under her, so I am wondering if she has been hiding them for a day or two!

Peanut Hamper has babies!!!!!! I only lifted the hut a tiny bit and I had to do some editing to brighten up the photo so you could see a bit O baby. I believe I saw 3 in there, but there could be more under mom. This is her first litter, so 3-4 babies would be ideal. She is being very protective and I only lifted her hut a smidge. When I checked the moms at around 9:15am, I heard some baby chirps but wanted her to settle in some more. They already have quills, so they are at least a few hours old, and I snapped the photo at about 11:30AM. I won't be checking under the hut again for at least a few days unless I hear or see signs of distress. Peanut Hamper is a first time mom, and with any mom there is always a chance they can freak out and kill some of all of their litter. So unless I hear noise or see a baby out of the nest (we want them to stay under mom), they are Schrodinger's babies for now. This is one of the toughest parts of breeding hedgehogs and why I don't recommend it. (Trigger warning) This is the part where we cross our fingers but try not to get too attached. I am going to keep it real here, so if you need to hold off on reading updates, that's ok. (Lower Decks fans REPRESENT!))

Tubby momma belly alert! Moms are looking great, I cleaned their cages today in prep for babies soon. Once the mommies have babies, they get very protective of their space. In many cases, we won’t be able to fully clean their cages for 2 weeks after babies are born. I will be attempting to spot clean, when the mommas allow, but I have to stop if they get upset. Hedgehogs will kill their litters if they feel unsafe, so I have to be really careful. In some cases, I may know that the momma has babies but I may not know how many are in the litter for several days. It is always better to err on the side of caution.

We like BIG butts, and we cannot lie! Big Momma butts, that is. Tanya will be a first time mom, and we are hoping for an average sized litter. Big litters can be traumatic to first time moms (or any mom, really), but big butts don't necessarily mean big litters. Hopefully it means good milk production, because that is very important for growing babies!
We are still 2 days away from the earliest healthy due date and thankfully we don't have any early litters so far. Early babies tend to be smaller and may not be developed fully, and there isn't much that can be done to help them.
We expect to have litters born over the next 2 weeks since not every hedgehog will get pregnant the first day they are with the male, and some pregnancies can be slightly longer than others. Whenever they show up, we are hoping for healthy moms with lots of milk and normal sized babies.

02/20/2025

Babies are due starting on the 23rd. The moms are looking great so far. We don't want to see any early litters. Another 2 days before we hit the safty zone and then we hope to see babies any time after that.

I didn’t breed for Christmas hedgehogs, so my boys and girls had a nice long break. I put couples together on Jan 18th, when the light started coming back and fertility is better. I moved the girls into their “mommy” cages about a week ago and guessed that 4/9 were pregnant. I checked bellies again today and 8/9 seem pregnant. As for #9, her little man passed away about a week or so after I put them together and this was his first time breeding. There is still a possibility that #9 is pregnant because her tummy feels slightly firm. I was hoping for at least 4 of them to get pregnant, so I am shocked. Some are first time moms, so we will keep our fingers crossed.
