‼️Ticks are getting to be very popular with this warm weather rolling in.
Its very important to understand how dangerous ticks can be for you AND your dogs!
Lyme disease in dogs have been rising as the months go by world wide.
This disease is increasing in numbers due to improper care twords your dogs and leaving the dogs to be exposed with ticks who carry it.
Vets carry many brands of flea and tick medicine for dogs and some medicine can even last you three months (Bravetco) compared to most that do one month (Frontline / Interceptor).
Without proper care/prevention for your dog, they are exposed to getting the disease that can be fatal if left untreated.
‼️Side effects from lyme disease are fever, sudden lameness, joint swelling and pain, lethargy, and loss of appetite, more severe cases, death with puppies or senior dogs.
Aside from just getting flea and tick medicine for the problem, there is MANY things that can be done to help kill back the population in your back yard! 🪲
-------------------
First thing, we need to understand what ticks thrive in. Ticks love the shade, tall grass/bushes, neglected spots on the yard that dont tend to have as much care like the main areas such as the spots you mow the lawn and pull weeds. And anything involving woods 🌲
We treat our dog kennels with wondercide weekly and put diatomaceous earth around our property line and outside of the kennels to act as a barrier to keep more coming from the woods to our yard.
Our dogs are bathed bi-weekly (while we do not expect everyone to do this; I am a dog groomer so I tend to bathe/nail care on my dogs a bit more often than normal) and while blow drying with a high velocity blow dryer, we can see their skin easily and that is a huge help to detect any ticks if found on them.
Aside from wondercide and diatomaceous earth, we keep bushes trimmed, dead trees cut, grass and little shorter than normal, and keep chickens/guinea around! They are a wonderful natural source to help keep the tick population to a minimum since they love to eat the little pest.
Our Long Coat Akita, Kodiak, was unfortunately exposed only being off his medicine for 7 days before he was back on his flea and tick medicine (shipment took a little longer than expected) and unfortunately once they have gotten it, the flea and tick medicine wont fight off the disease once they contracted it.
We was unaware he had the disease till we went to our every 6 months check up/exam that his blood work came back lyme disease positive. And upon closer observation, he did have quite a bit of lameness in his elbows and shoulders, and showed pain twords the vet tech when they was feeling around his body.
Kodiak was quickly put on medication that lasted 64 days and then rechecked 4 months later and was declared Lyme disease free 🙏🏻
If we did but catch it in time, and without us keeping a every 6 month check up with our vet, he could of had lyme disease for a whole year (like most people who only do exams once a year) Kodiak could of gotten worst with the disease and we absolutely do NOT want that.
With that being said, I strongly urge you to maintain a healthy flea and tick prevention for your fur babies and help them even more by maintaining a clean and tidy yard from ticks!
Let's have a awesome summer worry free from ticks and diseases 🌊☀️
