Maine C**n Size? Is one of the first questions I’m asked: “How big are the parents?” Some of the photos people are seeing on Social Media are exaggerated. Some are even AI. For health purposes we breed within the standard although occasionally one may get even larger. Many of the super sized cats you are seeing are perspective when taking the photo however they are significantly larger than your domestic cats for the most part. My male domestic long hair was 10lbs. My male Maine C**n at 2 years old is 18lbs and super long. I have included a photo of him on our XL Dog Bed. He stretches from end to end.
Maine C**n cats are one of the largest domesticated breeds, characterized by a muscular, rectangular body, with males typically weighing 13–25 lbs (\(5.9–11.3\) kg) and females weighing 8–18 lbs (\(3.6–8.2\) kg). They generally stand 10–16 inches tall at the shoulder and can reach lengths of up to 40 inches, including their long, bushy tails.
Maine C**n offspring will almost always be bigger than your average house cat. Because of that, our main focus as breeders is health, structure, and longevity
A few important things to note:
• A small queen does NOT mean small kittens.
• Queen weights fluctuate a lot due to pregnancy and nursing.
• Smaller queens often produce larger litters (yes… it’s as wild as it looks when they’re fully expanded 😅).
• Males are generally large, but studs in a cattery environment rarely reach their max size.
• Maine C**ns aren’t fully grown until around 4–5 years old.
• Breeding hormones + mating can really drain males.
• Neutered males almost always end up much bigger.
So if you’re looking at a cattery and see a male that’s, say, 18 lbs, that does not mean his sons won’t mature into 25-lb adults later on.
Size is fun to talk about—but health always comes first, and the rest tends to work itself out 🐾
