Spreading mulch the EASY way! I dump, and they sort out the rest πŸ“β€οΈ Wood chip mulch is the best material I've found for use in the run and the coop. It's high in carbon, while chicken manure is high in nitrogen... They need each other! The whole setup stays cleaner and not so smelly the natural way. Even better, come spring I'll be able to scoop up that beautiful compost and fertilize with it for booming vegetables πŸ₯’πŸ“πŸ†πŸ₯¦πŸ…πŸŒ± Then I start all over again 😎

All tarped up to prepare for winter. We got half of it done in August, but it was miserably hot, and we had other more pressing matters. Still I'm glad to have it done. It went a lot faster being cooler and having Heather to help spread the tarps.

These are recycled billboard vinyls, and I am very grateful for them! 10,000 sq ft would be costly to tarp any other way! I can start taking August's tarps up and plant that half this fall, and then leave the others on until early spring.

Today's mystery... I know who laid the two eggs closest to the boxes (Terra and Dora), but the smaller one closest to the camera is the second I've found of its type. Who done it? πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™‚οΈ

The ladies have started using the nesting boxes finally after a short adjustment period. The two lighter colored eggs were found laying around the run, so I put them each on a nesting box, and like magic the darker egg on the left was laid in a different box. There are golf balls (decoy eggs) in each box as well as fresh pine straw to replace the shavings they didn't seem to like. We'll see tomorrow I guess!

I don't know how it will go, but I'm ready to pull everything up and make my own mulch from buckwheat! Are you preparing for fall yet?

It was a rainy day today, but my schedule does not permit me many full days to work on the greenhouse construction, so I worked in the rain. It went a little slower as you might imagine, but I got it squared up, set two more posts, and poured a corner and a footing.

The most important part of a building is the first corner post. There was an existing concrete pad that used to have a shed on it, and the corners were broken (like in the second photo). While setting the post, I decided to pour new corners. I'm proud to report that I got it dead level and square all by myself πŸ‘ I said all that to say the first post of my greenhouse and equipment shed is up! I'll square up the other posts and pour the footing tomorrow hopefully.

Who needs one of these? If I have some interest, I'll print some more. They are dye-sublimated on a super soft 3/4 sleeved baseball style shirt. They are $20 (includes shipping) and all profits will go to growing and planting flowers to feed our pollenator friends. DM me if you are interested. 🌼🌺🌻🌸β™₯️🐝

What the heck? After months of nothing in the lettuce plug flat, one seed finally germinated! It's pretty, but not quite a salad 🀣 Oh well! It's a good thing my mizuna and kale are doing great! I'll have that salad yet πŸ˜‹
