DOG MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS šŸ–¤

Just like people, some dogs can be born struggling with mental health challenges.

Not every behavior problem is caused by ā€œbad ownersā€ or ā€œlack of training.ā€

Some dogs are genetically more prone to:
• Anxiety
• Fearfulness
• Noise sensitivity
• Obsessive behaviors
• Panic responses
• Hyperactivity
• Difficulty recovering from stress

Genetics shape the nervous system long before training ever begins.

That is why some dogs need more patience, structure, enrichment, rest, and understanding than others.

Mental health in dogs is real.

A dog who feels safe learns better.
A dog who feels understood trusts deeper.
A dog who feels supported can truly thrive.

This Mental Health Month, remember:
Behavior is communication. Sometimes your dog is not giving you a hard time… they are having a hard time.

Be your dog’s advocate—keep those tails waggin’. — Jonathan Cox

Did you know dogs help healing too?

From therapy dogs to service dogs, those wiggly butts, soft eyes, and happy tails can bring comfort during some of life’s hardest moments. Sometimes one smile from a dog can change an entire day for a nurse, doctor, patient, or hospital staff member.

Healing is teamwork.
Nurses care for the body.
Dogs often help care for the heart.

Thank you to every nurse, doctor, therapist, and staff member working long hours to help others feel safe, seen, and cared for.

And thank you to the dogs spreading comfort one tail wag at a time.

Happy Nurses Week. šŸ§”šŸ–¤

This is what we need to learn in 8 weeks. Most of our team already knows the basics. I want our team to become the best trainers for the dogs we serve. We want you to learn with us as we become 350 dog care experts. The class started on April 28th and will graduate on June 16th. We really need your support from your friends and families. We aim for 100 people to give $9.99 a month to support this program. Please comment 'help' for the link.

$9.99 doesn’t seem like much… until it fills a bowl.

Right now, a dog is waiting—hungry, unsure, hoping someone shows up for them.
Your small act can mean food, care, and a second chance.

Skip one snack.
Give a dog theirs.

Take a bite out of hunger. 🐾

B. F. Skinner and How Dogs Learn

This article is written in a simple, easy-to-read style.
We do this on purpose for our students.
Short lines. Clear ideas. Easy words.

Who was B. F. Skinner?

B. F. Skinner was a scientist.
He studied how animals and people learn.

He found something important:

Behavior is shaped by consequences.

That means:
What happens after a behavior…
changes if it will happen again.

What is Positive Reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement means:

Add something good → behavior happens more.

Example with a dog:

* Dog sits
* You say ā€œYESā€ and give a treat
* Dog sits again next time

The dog learns:
ā€œSitting works.ā€

This is how we teach:

* Sit
* Come
* Loose leash walking
* Calm behavior

Good outcomes = behaviors repeat.

What is Positive Punishment?

Positive punishment means:

Add something uncomfortable → behavior happens less.

Example:

* Dog pulls
* Pressure is added (jerk, choke, shock)
* Dog stops for the moment

But here is the problem:

The dog may learn:

* ā€œAvoid the pressureā€
NOT
* ā€œDo this insteadā€

What Skinner Showed Us

Skinner’s work teaches us:

* Reward what you want
* Show the dog what works
* Make learning clear and safe

When we rely on punishment:

* Dogs may shut down
* Dogs may feel confused
* Learning is not clear

When we use reinforcement:

* Dogs try more
* Dogs learn faster
* Dogs feel safe

Why We Avoid Positive Punishment

We avoid it because:

* It does not teach the right behavior
* It only stops behavior for a moment
* It can create fear or stress

Instead, we:

* Guide the dog
* Reward the right choice
* Set the dog up to win

Simple Rule to Remember

Reward what you want to see again.

That is the foundation of training.

Why This Article Is Written This Way

You may notice:

* Short sentences
* Simple words
* Clear spacing

We write like this for our students.

It helps:

* New learners
* Young readers
* Dyslexic readers

Because learning should be easy to understand—
for people and for dogs.

Final Thought

Skinner helped us understand one big idea:

Good consequences build strong behavior.

So ask yourself:

What is your dog learning from you today?

Famous Scientists in Animal Behavior
Simple guide
Why does this matter to all of us? Give good feeling and good feeling returns.

Dogs learn from the world around them.
These scientists helped us understand how.

B. F. Skinner
He showed that consequences matter.
Good outcomes make a behavior happen again.
Example: Sit → treat → dog sits more.

Ivan Pavlov
He showed that dogs learn by association.
They connect one thing to another.
Example: Bell + food → dog hears bell → expects food

Edward Thorndike
He made the Law of Effect.
Behaviors that work are repeated.
Example: Dog opens a door → gets out → tries it again.

Konrad Lorenz
He studied animals in nature.
He taught us about imprinting.
Young animals follow what they see first.

John B. Watson
He said we should study what we can see.
Behavior is shaped by the environment.

Karen Pryor
She made clicker training popular.
Click marks the right moment.
Then reward follows.

Patricia McConnell
She helped people understand dog language.
Dogs and humans communicate in different ways.
Clear, kind training builds trust.

What this means for your dog

* Dogs repeat what works
* Dogs learn from patterns
* Dogs feel and communicate
* Your timing matters
* Kind training builds better behavior

Simple rule:
Watch your dog.
Understand your dog.
Reward what you want.

That’s how learning happens

Our Goal here in Holdeville Oklahoma ļæ¼ At Allen Gamble Correctional Facility, the goal is not only to get every dog adopted as part of our team but also to have a vision of a purpose—to give every dog positive feelings about learning. When dogs feel good about all experiences, they start to find them normal. We don't ļæ¼dont belive dogs deserve the physical punishment. ļæ¼ All the shelter ļæ¼ dogs have endured enough abuse from neglect, abandonment, or losing everything they knew. We believe that dogs have truly never had a chance to learn from a teacher who believes in them. We all believe that every dog deserves a variable amount of rewards for happy feelings to keep them repeating these behaviors over and over again. Every dog wants to feel love and attention for being a calm dog before anything is asked of them. sincerely, you’re dog advocate Jonathan Cox K9 Trainer
