Periscapular pain (pain around and between the scapula) is a common complaint that might cause someone to seek treatment. Its causes can range from muscle strain and myospasm, pain that is referred down from neck pathologies like cervical facet joint issues, and referred pain from pathologies of the interscalene triangle. Not only does periscapular pain cause distress and discomfort, but its causes can also often lead to bigger issues in the future.

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is an impingement of the neurovascular bundle as it comes out of the neck to make its way down the limb. It has 3 main causes, but I will not bore you with those details (that’s my job). Patients with TOS will often complain about a variety of different symptoms such as paresthesia (odd sensations) and swelling of the arm and hand. These symptoms often occur during sleep or prolonged overhead activities. Its diagnosis can be tricky, but with sports medicine acupuncture, it can often be accurately diagnosed and treated.

Cervicogenic headaches are thought to be a leading cause of head pain. They are caused by soft tissue entrapment of the greater occipital and 3rd occipital nerves. Of course, poor posture is one of the main contributing factors of these headaches. But enough of that. Using the techniques of sports medicine acupuncture, this all-too-common ailment can be accurately diagnosed and treated. Yay!

Horse show season is about to begin! To kick it off, LaVoie Acupuncture will be at the Twin Rivers Winter Horse Trials in lovely San Miguel. Not only will we now be offering facial rejuvenation acupuncture, but I will be coming straight from a sports medicine acupuncture conference on neck and shoulder pain!

How time flies! It is already time to start getting that continuing education so that I can renew my LAc license. Luckily, next week I will be doing an intensive sports medicine acupuncture module on the neck and shoulders. And after that I will so be ready to tackle those with neck and shoulder ailments!
