Good Dog Spot

At Good Dog Spot, My Dog Spot's Training Branch, we use Errorless learning and Behavior Adjustment Therapy (BAT 2.0 developed by Grisha Stewart, MA, CPDT-KA) to teach you, the owner, that your dog is not being stubborn or naughty when displaying unacceptable behavior, but is simply responding to certain environmental situations that are making it feel uncomfortable or is creating reinforcement for

it. During our sessions we teach you how to communicate more effectively with your dog using fun exercises and games and show you how, by allowing your dog to interact with objects, triggers or environments in a more species-specific way, you give them greater control over their own safety which reduces fear, anxiety and ultimately aggressive displays or behaviors.

🐾 3 Tips for Calmer Walks

1. Reward Position not Pulling
Keeps treats handy and reward your dog when they walk beside you. Reinforce what you do want!

2. Practice in Low-Distraction Areas
Start in your yard or a quiet street before tackling busy trails. Build success in easy places first.

3. Use Movement Breaks
Let your dog stop to sniff and explore as part of the walk. Meeting their needs reduces frustration and makes walking together more enjoyable.

We often hear that the best dogs are the ones who don’t bark, don’t pull, and don’t cause a fuss. But here’s the truth: silence isn’t always a sign of calm — sometimes it’s a sign of stress or learned helplessness.

👉 What is learned helplessness?
It happens when a dog has tried to communicate — through barking, growling, or other signals — but those signals were ignored, corrected, or punished. Over time, the dog stops trying to express themselves at all, because they’ve learned that nothing changes or they’ll get in trouble.

A dog that has shut down may look “well-behaved” on the outside, but inside they’re anxious, fearful, or disconnected. That isn’t peace — it’s silence born from stress.

✨ A truly “good dog” is one who feels safe, understood, and supported. They may still bark, growl, or communicate in other ways — and that’s healthy. Communication means trust.

If your dog has gone quiet or seems “checked out,” it doesn’t mean they’re stubborn or broken. It means they need help feeling safe enough to communicate again.

👉 Have you ever noticed your dog go completely still or silent in a stressful situation?
✨ This is exactly the kind of work I do: helping dogs (and their humans) move from stress and shut-down to calm, confident, and connected.

In keeping with our tails as communication theme for this week, I thought it would be fun for us to take a look at some real - life examples.

A dog's tail is an important part of their communication system, but its meaning is always dependent on context.

🔹A slow, stiff wag may indicate heightened tension
🔹A relaxed, sweeping tail at a natural height often reflects friendliness.
🔹A tucked tail can signal fear, stress, or uncertainty.
🔹A high, rapid wag may represent strong arousal - whether excitement or agitation.

It is essential to interpret tail signals alongside the dog's overall posture, facial expressions, environment, and recent events. Only by considering the full context can we accurately understand what a dog is communicating.

A wagging tail doesn't always mea a happy dog. Fast stiff wags can signal stress or even warning, while loose, wiggly wags usually mean relaxation.
👉🏻Have you ever noticed your dog's tail "talking" differently in certain situations?
🤨 If tail signals confuse you, I can help you decode your dog's body language. Just post a quick video in the comments and let's chat.

It's a common belief that when a dog chews the couch, shreds the trash, or has an accident inside, they're "getting back at us." The truth is...dogs don't plot revenge.

👉🏻What looks like spite is usually stress, confusion, boredom, or an unmet need.

- Chewing may be a way to release anxiety.
- Bathroom accidents often come from stress, illness, or lack of routine.
- Pulling down the trash? That's curiosity and opportunity, not spite.

When we label our dogs as "naughty" or "spiteful" we miss the real message they're trying to send us: "I need help"

✨The good news: once we understand the why behind the behavior, we can create solutions that help both you and your dog feel calmer, more confident, and more connected.

If your dog's behavior feels frustrating, you're not alone and you don't have to figure it out on your own. This is exactly what I help pet parents with: uncovering the reasons behind fear, anxiety and stress and creating plans to help reduce these behaviors.

What's one behavior that your dog does that you've always wondered about? Drop it in the comments - I'd love to help you see it in a new light.

Dogs love their treasures, and sometimes holding onto them all is their way of saying ‘these make me feel safe.’ What looks like hoarding can actually be normal dog behavior. But if your pup is showing signs of stress, guarding, or anxiety around toys, that’s where training comes in.

With positive reinforcement and gentle guidance, we can teach dogs that sharing is safe — and that their humans will always provide enough. 💛
