Backyard Flocks. A single wild bird can spread bird flu and other diseases without looking sick – through droppings, contaminated feed and water, and other surfaces.

Here are simple steps on how to keep your flock and family safe:

Keep wild birds away from your coop and feed

Don’t share tools or equipment with other flocks

Don’t kiss or snuggle your birds

Wash your hands after handling poultry or eggs

Cook eggs and chicken thoroughly

Good flock care is community care!

Isolate sick birds and call the Sick Bird Hotline: (866) 922-2473

Birds can carry germs such as bird flu and Salmonella — and spread them to pets and people. Cats and dogs can get sick from infected birds or droppings, and these illnesses can travel on shoes and hands.

Help protect your family and community:

🐦 Don’t feed or touch wild birds or other wild animals

🧼 Wash hands after outdoor activities

🐾 Keep pets away from birds and bird droppings

🥩Don’t feed raw meat, raw milk, or raw pet food to your pets

🍳 Always cook eggs and poultry thoroughly

These simple habits can help protect against bird flu and reduce Salmonella risk.

Report sick or dead birds and animals by calling 211 to find your local animal control agency.
