Lepto cases confirmed in nearby counties.
Lepto is not always vaccinated for as a core vaccine, and is sometimes left up to owner’s discretion and lifestyle. We vaccinate all of our personal dogs for Lepto and I would encourage you all to do the same as well, especially since this is a zoonotic disease (meaning your dog can get you sick!)
Leptospirosis has been reported in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties in 2025!
Have you every heard of Leptospirosis?
Lets take a moment and review some of the concerning highlights.
1. Lepto is a bacterial infection.
2. Lepto bacteria is found in soil and standing water and comes from the urine of wild animals like raccoons and rats.
3. Lepto can easily infect dogs. It is less common in cats.
4. Lepto is zoonotic, which means it can infect people too!
5. It causes kidney and liver failure.
6. Symptoms of lepto include: fever, shivering, muscle tenderness, reluctance to move, increased thirst, changes in the frequency or amount of urination, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, lethargy, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes), or painful inflammation within the eyes.
7. Leptospirosis is generally treated with antibiotics and supportive care. When treated early and aggressively, the chances for recovery are good but there is still a risk of permanent residual kidney or liver damage.
8. Currently available vaccines effectively prevent leptospirosis and protect dogs for at least 12 months. Annual vaccination is recommended for at-risk dogs.
If you wish to get your dog vaccinated for lepto, your dog will need a series of two injections 2-4 weeks apart. After that, annual boosters are effective.
Call Harmony Vet Care 813-871-0850 if you wish to discuss your dog's risk, or schedule an appointment for a lepto vaccine. Lepto vaccines at Harmony Vet Care are $20 each. If your dog has an annual exam on file within the last 12 months, there is no exam fee!
