🚨 Recent cases of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) have been confirmed in California, Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Virginia. While there are no reported cases in our area, we want to keep our clients informed and vigilant—especially during travel season. 🐴
🧬 What is EIA?
Equine Infectious Anemia is a viral disease spread by blood-feeding insects like horseflies and deerflies. Infected horses become lifelong carriers and can spread the disease causing fever, anemia, weight loss, swelling, and even death. There is no cure, vaccine, or definitive treatment, and positive cases are often humanely euthanized to prevent the spread of the virus.
🧪 Coggins Testing Requirements:
The Coggins test is used to detect EIA and is:
✅ Required annually for most horses
✅ Legally required for horses crossing state lines, attending shows/events, trail riding, or being sold
✅ Strongly recommended for horses exposed to new or traveling horses
📌 At North Star, we also recommend all horses stay up to date on Coggins testing as a precaution during storm season and possible emergency travel or evacuations.
‼️If your horse hasn’t had a Coggins test in the past 12 months, now is the time to schedule it.
