It is the time of year when mice are coming into our sheds, grain bins, garages and homes. You may be tempted to put out rodenticide (rat/mouse killer) to eliminate the problem. PLEASE check the label of the rodenticide that you use; your pet may accidentally eat some. Do NOT get the one with the ingredient broMETHalin. (The other rodenticide has a treatment of vitamin K and the toxin can be reversed if discovered early.)
Bromethalin is a newer type that causes brain swelling. THERE IS NO ANTIDOTE. To help remember the name of the fatal poison look for the word “meth” and stay away. Call your veterinarian immediately if your pet eats any poison, we may be able to induce vomiting and eliminate the toxin.

Even safer than rat poison - get a cat!!!

We have had a lot of people ask about heartworm preventatives lately, more specifically about ProHeart12. ProHeart12 is an injectable heartworm preventative that is administered by your veterinarian that will last for twelve months - yes, one whole year!!

When compared to monthly Heartgard chewables, the cost for ProHeart12 is between $0.33 and $2.50 more per month (depending on the weight of your dog) and you'll have one less thing to remember each month!

To be eligible for this preventative, your dog must be at least one year old and have a current negative heartworm test.

Please give us a call (731) 644-9933 if you have any questions about ProHeart12, or any other heartworm preventatives.

FEBRUARY IS PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH

***Drop a picture of your pet showing off their teeth in the comments!***

* By age three, 70-85% of dogs and cats have some degree of dental disease!
* Periodontal (Dental) Disease is the #1 disease in dogs and cats! This is a bacterial infection and can be extremely painful!
* "Doggie Breath" is NOT normal! Bad breath, trouble chewing, inflamed/red gums, and even excessive drooling may be signs of dental disease.

Prevention starts at home!
* Brushing your pets teeth (just like you brush yours!) has proven to be helpful in preventing dental disease.
* "Lift the Lip" Don't be afraid to look at your dogs teeth - check for tarter buildup, discolored or loose teeth, red inflamed gums, or anything else that may not look normal.
* An oral exam should be a part of your pets annual physical - have a licensed veterinarian take a look at your pets teeth to catch potential problems early! This will save you money in the long run, and keep your pet pain-free.

***Pictured here is our vet tech, Paige, performing a dental cleaning procedure and her pup, "Charlie" showing off his pearly whites!***

If you would like to schedule an oral exam or a dental cleaning for your pet, give us a call! (731) 644 - 9933
