Many of our guests have been asking, so we are very happy to announce: Pineapple is out for the season! He will have access to his outdoor exhibit when daytime temperatures are above 70 degrees. American Alligators are only found in the southern United States and are not adapted to survive in cold temperatures. Now that the summer heat is here, so is Pineapple!

Our animals get enrichment every day here at the Bergen County Zoo to keep them mentally and physically active! Our cotton-top tamarins got some food hidden in the top of a pineapple for them to encourage natural foraging behaviors. Tamarins forage in groups and communicate to alert each other when they find food. Can you hear their little squeaks?

We’d like to give you a formal introduction to our new white-nosed coati, Pearl! We gave her a few days to explore her new exhibit before announcing her, but we’re so excited for you to come see her! Pearl will have access to her outdoor exhibit when temperatures are 50 degrees or above.

White-nosed coatis are closely related to common raccoons, and share many of the same admirable traits, like intelligence, curiosity, and agility. Although unlike raccoons, coatis are more active during the day. Come visit Pearl and see her climbing the branches in her exhibit or snoozing in one of her new hammocks. She may be inside as she continues adjusting to her new home, but seeing her is definitely worth some patience!

The summer heat is here, and that means everyone here at the zoo is focused on keeping cool. Our zookeepers work tirelessly to make sure our animals stay comfortable no matter the weather, and here you can see that our American Elk Edith is certainly taking advantage of an opportunity to cool off! Enrichment like sprinklers and misters give our animals a chance to regulate their body temperatures while also exploring new sensory experiences. Come to the zoo this summer to see how different types of animals find their own ways to beat the heat!

Our Andean condors are getting a major exhibit upgrade! We are so excited to share these updates with more information coming soon! Swipe to see the concept plan for their new, enhanced habitat. Key features include:

• Massive expansion: Significant increase in horizontal and vertical space, including a 30-foot tree that allows for various perching and flight opportunities.
• Immersive Design: Enhanced with realistic rock formations, natural water features, and habitat-specific vegetation to mimic their native environment.
• Behavioral Enrichment: Implementation of a unique, innovative thermal wind structure for expression of natural behaviors.
• Conservation Education: New signage highlighting our work to protect this vulnerable species.

While some elements may be subject to adjustment, this is very close to our final vision. Stay tuned for more updates!

Brownie our sheep got her annual haircut this past weekend! As the weather gets warmer, shearing her wool will keep her comfortable and happy for the season. 🐑

Domestic sheep have been bred over time to grow wool continuously. If not sheared at least once a year, the wool can overgrow and lead to overheating, “wool blindness” (impaired vision), and an inability to stay clean. Stop by the Bergen County Zoo to see Brownie showing off her new look!

The prairie dog babies have started to pop up just in time for Mother’s Day 💕 Prairie dog pups spend about 6 weeks underground, but now they are out exploring their habitat! Don’t miss your chance to see them before they are all grown up!

Browse season is here! 🌿 Our specialized program provides safe plants for our animals to use as bedding, shelter, enrichment, or a part of their diet!* The sheep and goats got some freshly cut bamboo, and it looks like Tabitha loved it!

*To ensure safety and maintain strict, specialized diets, please do not feed our animals any plants. Thank you!*
