Squirrels stay active all winter and rely on fall food caches to survive.
They bury around 3,000 nuts, but frozen ground makes most inaccessible.
They need roughly 1,000 nuts to make it through winter.
Supplemental feeding (walnuts, hazelnuts, unsalted peanuts, sunflower seeds)
can help them survive harsh weather.

Fall migration is in full swing, and the Spring Creek Prairie Audubon Center is alive with activity! Smith’s Longspurs that have been recorded along the ridgetops, Sedge Wrens in the grasses, and raptors in the skies.
