The constant low temps, ice and snow have made it very difficult to get to all of my outside customers without barns or heated areas Please bear with me as I try to reschedule everyone and not overload myself with work. Stay warm everyone!

I will be taking precautions for all upcoming appointments regarding the EHV outbreak.

I will be spraying and disinfecting my tools/truck between each barn, changing clothes between each barn, and washing hands/face.

PLEASE notify me BEFORE I come to your facility if you have any horses showing symptoms, fever, lethargic, neurological. The feet can wait. I do not want to risk carrying anything from one barn to another.

Thank you for understanding and be safe!

Another rocket donkey fixed up! This mares owner had been trying to advocate for her horse to the previous farrier that they were leaving too much foot at the resets. This horse was done less than 3 weeks ago… The mare was so sore in her suspensory ligaments in both front legs from long toes and forward run heels the owner couldn’t even exercise her. As soon as I got both from feet done she quit dancing around and took a deep breath and hung her head and relaxed. We will have some work to do to rehab the feet back to “normal” but thankfully this owner is willing to do whatever we need to, to get her girl feeling her best again.

As farriers our job isn’t just to do the bare minimum and blow through to make some cash. When I work on horses it’s to better the foot and the horses comfort. I don’t care if it takes an extra 30 minutes for an older horse or I need to put a new set of shoes on each time because the horses needs have changed. Just care and take your time. 😁

Corrective trim and shod with kerkhart 00 standard, leather wedge pad with dental impression material.

I work to aid in the comfort of the horse. This mare was anysy, dancing all over and then took a deep breath and relaxed after the first foot was done. Picking her second foot up for me as if to say “this one too please”.

I watch for more than just a calm stance with all 4 feet under them. I watch the whole body and take into account any tightness and soreness above the feet and see what i can do to balance rhe feet to aid the body.

No foot. No horse. 🙌🏼 d

It’s National Farriers Week! Farriers work hard year-round to provide quality hoof care for your horses and play a key role in your horse’s soundness and performance. Horse’s feet are vital to their overall health. We encourage you to show your gratitude not only this week but year-round to the professional who helps keep your horse upright and sound!

Show appreciation for your farrier throughout the year by following these simple steps!
1. Provide a safe location for working on your horse. Ideally this means a clean, well-lit, level work area for handling needs. Uneven ground can also impact the ability to be accurate on balanced trims.

2. Have horses caught and ready to go prior to your farrier’s arrival. Allow yourself time to remove any blankets, fly boots, etc. and have them properly groomed/cleaned so your farrier isn’t waiting on you.

3. Have your payment ready the day of your horse’s appointment. And go ahead and schedule the next appointment before your farrier leaves. This is not only courteous of their time but also helps keep your horse’s feet maintained on a consistent schedule which can prevent hoof and performance issues from arising!

4. As the owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your horse has good manners when having their feet handled. Oftentimes, it’s best to hold your horse for your farrier’s safety. If you are not available, always have someone available to keep nervous or ill-behaved horses calm during the appointment.

5. Take the time and make the effort to say “thanks” for a job well done! Even simple offers such as a cold beverage on a hot day makes a difference.

Always remember a good farrier is an important part of your horse’s team. Building a solid relationship with your farrier can help set your horse up for success!

Today’s case: 20ish year old pony with a history of laminitis and an obvious very distorted leg. Here is a classic example of the leg looks worse on X-rays than it does on the outside. All of the vets go “ohhhhh…” when they see the radiographs.

Luckily we have been able to manage this one the last few years successfully and her owner got some new X-rays when we noticed a round of laminitis stsrtng again.

So to the vet they went for new images so I could adjust her trim and shoeing.

This girl has a lot of things going on in her right front. Uneven pastern, fetlock, and coffin bones causing multiple joint spaces to be pinched. So what do we do? We have to pick an area to adjust and work on and see if it makes her better or worse. Today we decided the coffin bone was where we wanted to adjust things. I dropped the outside (lateral) branch of her hoof wall down to open up the joint space.

It’s going to be some trial and error again to get this girl on the mend but her owner is doing what they can at home between shoeing appointments to alleviate her soreness ❤️

Before and after of a horse i I had the pleasure of helping today. A “natural” barefoot trimmer worked on her 4 days prior and the poor girl was so sore.

You can see the raised sole on the before picture. That sole pressure was causing her pain just standing and walking around. Once i removed that and re leveled her trim she stood much more comfortably and we set her up with some shoes. You can see she was standing with her shod foot underneath her body and her barefoot out in front of her.

No foot. No horse.

Every athlete deserves a good pair of shoes 🐎 ❤️
