Fun On The Run Kennel - Meredith Mapes

Fun On The Run Kennel - Meredith Mapes We are preparing for Rondy 2025! Owned and operated by Meredith Mapes from Palmer, Alaska.

We're a small sled dog team in Alaska, owned and operated by Meredith Mapes, 4 time finisher of the Junior Iditarod, 49th place finisher of the Iditarod in 2018. I've been racing dogs since I was around 7 years old, including finishing four Junior Iditarod sled dog races, and winning four Junior Aurora 25/25 races. I took a break from racing to complete college, but now that the finish line is in

sight I'm starting to build my sled dog team again to qualify for the Iditarod in 2016, and run the race in 2017. We are currently actively looking for sponsors on all levels to support our race plans, I want to build a competitive kennel which takes a lot of time and money, which is difficult to do while I finish school and pay off my student loans. In order to build a good team, you need good dogs, and I'm looking to buy from top caliber mushers, which takes more money than buying any old sled dog around, but it will give me the bloodlines I need to breed my own dogs and be competitive for years to come. Race history:
4 time finisher of the Junior Iditarod (best finish 6th)
4 time winner of Junior Aurora 25/25
3 time finisher of Junior Cantwell Classic (Humanitarian award for best dog care in 2009)
2 attempts at Junior Yukon Quest (first year got too cold, second year had food poisoning)
1 time finisher of Aurora 50/50 (the first time I attempted it my team was hit by a snow machine)
2nd place at Willow Winter Carnival 2-dog skijor race 2015
4th place 2-dog bikejor at Chugiak Dog Mushers Dryland race #2 2014
6th place 2-dog bikejor at Chugiak Dog Mushers Dryland race #1 2014
Last place (red lantern award) in 1-dog, 5-dog, and 7-dog Junior World Championships (2002, 2007, 2009)
2nd place Aurora Dog Mushers Championship 5-dog junior 2007

❄️ Libby Riddles: Trailblazer of the North

Yesterday we celebrated Rick Swenson, and today we’re proud to feature the second inductee into the Inaugural Iditarod Hall of Fame, listed in the order of Iditarod victories. Libby Riddles forever changed history when she became the first woman to win the Iditarod.

Born in Wisconsin in 1956, Libby moved to Alaska as a teenager, drawn by the wilderness and the dogs that would one day lead her to greatness. After years of building and training her own team in western Alaska, she entered the 1985 Iditarod ready to prove herself.

Her victory is the stuff of legend. When a fierce storm blew in and many mushers held back, Libby made the daring choice to push forward. She camped out in a whiteout, pressed on through brutal winds, and never gave up the lead. On March 20, 1985, after 18 days on the trail, she crossed the finish line in Nome — the first woman ever to do so as Champion of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

🏅 That year, Libby was also awarded the Leonhard Seppala Humanitarian Award for her exceptional care of her team, and her lead dogs were honored with the Golden Harness.

Her groundbreaking win shattered barriers, inspired a generation of women in mushing and beyond, and earned her a permanent place in Alaska sports history. Today, we celebrate Libby Riddles — a true trailblazer, and an inaugural member of the Iditarod Hall of Fame.

👉 Stay tuned as we continue honoring the legends of The Last Great Race®.
