DOG OVERPOPULATION in CALIFORNIA IS AT A CRISIS LEVEL
Everyone we know that work for public/municipal shelters or are in rescue, regardless of species or breed, is stretched thin, is overwhelmed, and exhausted.
Did you know that:
• Municipal shelters are holding/housing animals at twice their intended capacity. If the building was built to house 150 dogs, they are now holding 300 or more. Imagine there being 15 employees, but the number of animals needing care, or even attention, has doubled.
• The % of young, healthy dogs leaving a municipal shelter ALIVE is only 55-60%. For every 100 dogs in a shelter, only 55 will walk out.
• Litters of puppies are being "found" as "strays" or turned in. For the first time in history, public shelters are having to euthanize puppies. That's right. Litters of healthy little pudgy puppies ending up in a blue barrel at the end of the day.
• Nobody chose the veterinary field or "animal control" as a career path so they can kill animals. Don't blame or bash people that work for or volunteer at municipal shelters. We know shelter managers who find their veterinary staff at the backdoor of the building, sobbing into their hands, at the end of the day.
Please DO NOT support BACKYARD breeders by buying their dogs. Did you know that California is home to several well known puppy-mill-backyard breeders whose puppies "look" beautiful but look how many of them grow up to be sick, have health or behavioral issues, and it's all down to to inbreeding or poor breeding. Want their names? Ask any one in the "Akita Community" and they'll tell you.
Please SPAY and NEUTER your Dogs. Encourage your neighbors, friends, family to do the same. If you meet people who are ignorant about the health benefits of neutering and/or want to keep their male dogs 'male', tell them to go buy a pair at www.neuticles.com
