The weather has been heating up and that means many pool days, lake days, and beach days. Being near the water is a great way to escape the heat, and it’s also a great exercise. Some breed of dogs take to the water naturally, while some have to learn how to be comfortable in water.

Here’s how to teach your dogs how to swim:

1. Introduce them slowly, in the shallows, and following their lead. Supporting under the belly if they start to paddle.
2. Be patient and use positive reinforcement like treats and praises.
3. Always supervise your dogs in or near water, and make sure they have an accessible exit.
4. If your dog struggles in water, you should use a life jacket until they are a stronger swimmer.
5. Make it fun with toys to play in the water.
6. Make sure to give them frequent breaks, and keep them hydrated with fresh water.

The weather is heating up and the summer vibes are here! So before you take off on vacation, head to the beach, or spend the day pool side.. We want you to know how to keep your dogs safe while in or near the water this summer!
Water Safety Tips For Your Dogs:

1. Never leave your dog unattended around water. Just like kids, dogs require constant supervision around water.
2. Make sure there is an accessible exit so your dog can easily get out of the water when needed.
3. Monitor water conditions and hazards like riptides or algae.
4. Learn canine CPR just incase.
5. Dog life jackets should always be used especially if your dog is not a strong swimmer.
6. Make sure your dogs take frequent swim breaks, and stay hydrated with fresh water.
