🐢❤Turtle Takeover Day 7!❤🐢
If you need to move a turtle or tortoise out of an unsafe place, do not relocate them far away! While this may sound silly, there have been cases of rescuers bringing the turtle with them to their next stop, rather than only moving the Testudine across the road. Many of the Testudines we encounter in Florida typically have their own home ranges, sometimes as small as 2 acres. Their home ranges are the areas they are familiar with, meaning they know where to find food, water, and shelter. If they are moved, they may be incredibly disoriented. Plus, many species have incredible homing abilities, and will attempt to make their way back to their home range, which can put them in many unsafe situations. The best thing to do if you see a turtle or tortoise is leave them where they are, and if they are in the road, simply move them across the road, but not across town.✨

Fun Fact: Box Turtles have very long lives, often over 50 years, and tend to stay within a few hundred yards of their original hatch site!🐢

🐢❤Turtle Takeover Day 6!❤🐢
Today we're focusing specifically on Gopher Tortoises, which are an important Keystone Species in our ecosystems. Gopher Tortoises are a protected species here in Florida, meaning it is illegal to touch, feed, relocate, or harass them. However, if a Gopher Tortoise is in danger and needs rescuing, it is important to know that you are protected as the rescuer, and are able to touch them for the sake of rescuing. This means if you find one in an unsafe area, such as the road, you are allowed to move it across. Or, if you find one that is injured, you are allowed to bring it to a lisenced wildlife rehabilitator. Their burrows are also protected, meaning you cannot damage or attempt to bury a burrow. For more details, visit https://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/wildlife/gopher-tortoise/✨

Fun fact: Gopher Tortoise burrows can be up to 10 feet deep and 40 feet long, and can help over 350 different species by providing shelter from forest fires!🐢

🐢❤Turtle Takeover Day 5!❤🐢
Reptiles start to get much more active during the warmer months, which also coincides with peak nesting. If you see a turtle or tortoise nesting, please do not interfere! After they've laid their eggs, please leave the nest as-is. Do not try to cover it to protect the eggs. The eggs are an important part of the food chain in the ecosystem, and as sad as it may be to see animals eat them, turtles lay many eggs at a time to compensate for those that may not be viable, or those that may get damaged or eaten. Plus, netting over a nest traps the babies when they do hatch, leaving them stuck and unable to eat. Their best chance of survival begins when they are eggs, and they should always be left alone.❤️‍🩹

Fun fact: Testudine genders are directly related to the temperature of the soil or sand in the nest, with males being the product of cooler temperatures, and females being the product of warmer temperatures.🐢

🐢❤Turtle Takeover Day 4!❤🐢
Another frequent reason for Testudines to be admitted is when the babies are believed to be orphaned, and rescuers bring them in for help. Unlike other species like birds and mammals, reptiles do not care for their young. This means that as soon as they hatch from their eggs, they are on their own! Unless a baby Testudine is found injured or appears sick, or is in an unsafe situation, they should be left alone. If one comes into contact with a pets' mouth, however, they should always be brought into the hospital, regardless of if they appear uninjured. Domestic animals' mouths have bacteria that could cause health problems, so it is always best for us to do a health check before returning them to the wild. Questions? Contact FWH!✨

Fun Fact: Gopher Tortoise babies are very yellow, but this fades to dark brown or black as they grow into adulthood.🐢

🐢❤Turtle Takeover Day 3!❤🐢
Please always respect their space. This goes for all wildlife, but especially our slower-moving reptilian friends. Being slower crittters means that they cannot get away as easily as other species, and are more at risk of being grabbed by humans or pets. Testudines can feel sensations on their shells, so any touch is very stressful for them. It is also illegal to feed wildlife, including Testudines. If you see a turtle or tortoise in the wild, or even a burrow, admire from a distance! Do not feed, touch, hunt, play with, or handle them in any way. Rescuing a Testudine should be the only time they are touched.❤️‍🩹

Fun fact: Unlike cartoons where turtles run off and leave their shell behind, Testudine shells are actually part of their body, with the spine build into the shell. Their shells also have a protective layer of keratin, which is the same material as human hair and nails!🐢✨
