With the holidays and all of the cooking that comes with it here is a reminder of what nuts your dog should not eat 🄜🐾

08/07/2023

We need our dogs to growl so we know when they are close to their limit. That they really need us to listen and things are getting serious.

They are never a warning we should seek to remove but one we should be glad to hear. Because that’s what’s going to prevent things from escalating further.

Today is šŸ« World Chocolate Day, and as pet owners know, this popular food is 🚫 toxic to pets. Even small amounts can cause adverse reactions, and the darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is for them. āš ļø

Make sure to keep all types of chocolate out of your pet’s reach. šŸ™…ā€ā™€ļø

What type of dog water bowl do you use? šŸ¶šŸ’§

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🄣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal DermatitisšŸ™€: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nosešŸ‘ƒšŸ¼ and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

So stainless steelšŸ“ bowls are the safest, right?

Well not so fast…. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowls😫. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled ā€œToxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🚫 that won’t leach contaminants over time. We need to ACTIVELY supervise our dogs with kids of any age! If we cannot actively supervise their interactions together, then the best thing is to separate dogs and kids. Doing so can help prevent tragedies of all sorts. I don’t care what breed, age, or temperament. The most perfect and sweetest of all dogs can and will get annoyed. Push past annoyance and that’s when injuries (or worse) can happen. A dog’s growl is a warning. A dog’s bite is a defense measure.

•DOGS ARE NOT JUNGLE GYMS. Allowing a child to crawl, stand or jump on, or hang on your dog is not safe for the dogs or the child. Not only can it result is a dogs bite but can also injure the dog.

•HUGS ARE A GIFT FOR HUMANS. Hugs given to dogs can often cause anxiety, which can result in a bite

•DOG BOWLS/FOOD/TOYS/CRATES ARE NOT CHILDREN’S PLAY THINGS. Dogs can be territorial and possessive. Guess what that can result in…. A dog bite.

•LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE. Seriously. Don’t allow a child around a sleeping dog. They may startle them awake. When dogs are startled…. They can react by biting.

Don’t have dogs? Teach kids to ask before petting a strange dog. Some dogs love attention, others don’t. Teach kids to be dog friendly before teaching dogs to be kid friendly.

A friend shared this with me and it’s absolutely brilliant!
Just because your dog doesn’t want to play, is shy, etc DOES NOT mean you shouldn’t be socializing your dog and taking them to new places for new experiences!

The other day I was at the local public park (not a dog park, but dogs are allowed there). We were walking along in a high movement area so I had my dog on a leash. Another dog, off leash, sees us and starts approaching.
My dog needs her space so we start moving away, but the dog got to us before we could leave. My dog was stressing a little so I politely said to the woman, sorry my dog doesn't want to play and ushered her dog away.
Her dog gets the message and moves on.
Quite good, right? Here comes the juicy part:
As I’m leaving the owner comes to me with a speech more or less like this:
Hey, if your dog is nervous and doesn’t even want to play with other dogs, go somewhere else! Don’t come to the park and ruin other dogs fun.
I heard this and a wave of fury started taking over, but suddenly I think I had a lightbulb moment and switched gears completely.
With the biggest, friendliest smile, I opened my arms as wide as I could and said Ohhhhh! Come here... I want to give you a BIG hug!
With panic in her eyes she backs up, speechless and quickly starts walking away.
I said "Hey, don’t run, I’m so friendly, come on, I only want to give you a hug! I’m friendly I promise... I just want to Hug You!"
Still speechless and backing away with terror now, I said "Wait, You don’t want my friendly hug?"
She yelled No!
I said "Well neither does my dog! Have a nice day.!!!"
As I walked away, I saw her just standing there, speechless and she was leashing her dog! šŸ˜…
I think I’ll try this approach more often 🤣

Beware of foxtails while out and about with your dogs! Foxtails have barbed razor-sharp needles that are dangerous to your dog. If you are exposed, thoroughly inspect the hot spots (ears, nose, eyes, underbelly, between toe pads).

- Foxtails can go up the nose and migrate to the brain.
- Embedded foxtails can cause pain and even death in extreme cases
- Pets with long fur and long ears are especially prone to getting foxtails
- Foxtails move in one direction. They dig in, and they do not come out on their own.
- Foxtails love paws and can easily embed between toes.
- Foxtails can dig into any part of the body, and they don't dissolve.
- Foxtails pieces can easily be inhaled & puncture a lung!
