MCSO WARNS EQUINE COMMUNITY TO BE ON HIGH ALERT FOLLOWING HORSE THEFTS IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is urging our equine community to remain on high alert after reports of horse thefts in Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties.

Although we have not received any reports of horses being stolen in Martin County, we did get a suspicious incident report involving an individual trespassing and photographing a home with a horse barn. While we cannot officially connect these incidents, we want our robust equine community to be fully aware of what has occurred in our neighboring areas.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has an Agricultural Unit that will be working to inform our local communities about these occurrences in hopes of preventing horse thefts here. We ask everyone to share this information and remain vigilant. For now, here is a few reminders for horse owners.

Please ensure that all gates, fencing, and barns are secure, and check regularly for any signs of tampering.

Keep recent photos and records of your horses, including microchip information and registrations, as this can aid law enforcement in the event of a theft.

Make sure your exterior security cameras are activated and recording, and always report any suspicious activity or vehicles immediately.

We encourage you to inform and collaborate with your equine neighbors to create a network of awareness regarding this issue.

So true... everyone thinks someone else is contaminating the ground water when truth is, that beautiful manicured lawn comes at a real cost. Ask your lawn crew not to use chemicals, pull the weeds and use compost to fertilize. It does take a little more time and effort, maybe even cost a little more $ but the reward is our health, our children's health, and the health of wildlife and the environment overall!

Something to think about...

Good information... knowing how it equates to an activity like cantering puts it in perspective.

Horses travel every day for a number of reasons—to be bought and sold, for competition, for breeding purposes, etc. Whether your horse travels by road or by air, horse owners need to be aware of the complications that may occur due to transportation, including traumatic injuries, diarrhea, muscular problems, respiratory problems, overheating, colic, and even laminitis (in the case of overweight horses).

Following are a few tips to help your equine friend maintain good health and welfare during transport. This list is by no means complete and we encourage you to read "Practical Guidelines to Assess Fitness for Transport of Equidae” to find additional advice. This document will also help you understand regulations and avoid penalties for being out of compliance: https://tinyurl.com/yck9cz86

• Inadequate management of feed and water intake during travel could cause colic, gastric ulceration and heat stress. Food and water should be provided prior to transport, during regular rest breaks and upon arrival at destination.
• Ensure your horse’s immunizations are up to date against respiratory pathogens to protect your animal from these diseases.
• The horse should be rested before the journey, given rest stops during travel and have time to recover on arrival at the destination.
• The vehicle should be well-ventilated to help prevent respiratory problems or overheating.
• Drive slowly and carefully (NO TEXTING, avoid driving when fatigued or eating while driving, etc.) to provide a comfortable journey for the animal and reduce the risk of injury and fatigue.

As always, your veterinarian remains your best resource. If you have questions, consult your horse doctor about preparing your equine friend for travel and keeping them safe!
