✨ Our client service representatives (CSRs) are truly the heart of our hospital ✨

At our busy 24/7 emergency and referral veterinary hospital, the days can be long and unpredictable. With appointments across multiple departments and emergency triages walking through our doors at any moment, things can get hectic fast.

But no matter what the day brings, our CSRs are always there — greeting every client with a smile, staying calm in high-stress situations, and keeping everything running smoothly behind the desk. They are the very first face our clients see, and the steady support our team relies on.

We are so grateful for all of their dedication, hard work, and compassion. 💙🐾

August 17th is !
Unfortunately, black kittens and cats are often overlooked at shelters and take
longer to be adopted. Wrongly, they are thought to be unlucky or mischievous.
🖤 If you have a black cat, make them feel extra special today.
🖤 If you have been thinking of getting a cat and are able to care for it, consider
adopting a black cat.
🖤 If you don’t fall into either of these categories, consider donating to your local
shelter or tagging a friend in the comments below to spread to word!
🖤 Post a picture of your black cat in the comments below

With the kids back to school, it may seem like summer is over but please remember, it is August and it is still very hot outside.

A dog's paws are just as sensitive as our feet. Here are some ways to protect your dog’s paws on hot pavement (or artificial grass):
🐾 Check the weather and take precautions before you take your pet outside. Asphalt temperatures can vary with air temperatures, cloud cover, wind, etc. For example, 77°F air temp could result in 125°F asphalt temp - and it only takes 60 seconds on 125°F asphalt for a dog's pads to burn.
🐾 Place the back of your hand on the ground for 10 seconds, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
🐾 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
🐾 If your pet can easily adapt to them, invest in a pair of booties to protect your pet's paws.
Symptoms of paw burn may include limping, refusing to walk, darker than usual or discolored pads, excessive licking or biting of feet, visible blisters, extreme redness, and missing skin or parts of pads.
If your pet experiences burnt paws, contact Pet Emergency and Referral Center at 561-691-9999.

We love hearing about our patients once their home, this is such a great ending for a sweet boy.

“Hi, Dr. Zaidi and team!

Hope you're having a great day today! Cody is doing well and resting after his treatment yesterday.

I'm writing to send these fun pictures we took last week after first learning of Cody's remission. Please share with the team there and/or feel free to use on social if you'd like.

Thanks again for all that you do!

Best,
--Rebecca”

Matata, a 6 year old miniature Aussie had a consult with our surgery service after running along her fence line, trying to play with another dog.

Since April, Matata has gotten to know our surgery nurses very well during the re-splinting of her leg! Each time she comes in, she’s showered with cuddles and kisses!

🐾 Patient Spotlight: Brownie! 🐾

Say hello to Brownie — the cutest boy with the most expressive little face! 😍 Brownie came in to see us because his eyes were puffy, and he had been rubbing and scratching at his face. Poor guy! 😢

He has a history of allergies but it seemed like this time he had anaphylaxis. Thankfully, Dr. Pelanne treated him quickly and he was such a brave and sweet patient the entire time! 💉❤️

After his treatment, Brownie got some well-deserved treats 🍖 — and he made it very clear that he wanted more by sniffing them out over the counter like a pro! 😂

We’re so glad you’re feeling better, Brownie! 🐶💕

📸 Swipe to see his adorable visit in action!

Meet Bubbles 💕
Our 6-year-old Biewer Terrier and very important staff member!
She has a seizure disorder that requires medication three times a day—so she comes to work with Mom and Dad, and we make sure she pulls her weight around here 😉 Whether she's supervising snacks, greeting clients, or napping on the job, Bubbles is the heart of our team! 🐾💼

When your patient needs an ECG and some TLC 🫀💗 This shaggy furball was loving his head pats while Dr. Pelanne monitored his ECG. Sometimes a little affection is the best medicine.

Cuteness overload!!! 🐶💉
Meet Whiskey — a 3-month-old miniature smooth-haired Dachshund who came to our emergency room after having an allergic reaction to his first round of vaccines from his regular vet.
Thankfully, with some quick care and lots of cuddles, this little guy was feeling much better in no time! 💕🐾

07/27/2025

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) is a malignant tumor of the cells that line blood vessels. It is much more common in dogs than other species. HSA occurs most frequently in large breed dogs, especially German Shepherd dogs, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers. In dogs, the primary site is usually the spleen. This type of cancer causes blood vessels to branch, fragment, become leaky, and ultimately rupture. HSA is difficult to diagnose because dogs often show no symptoms until the tumor has grown so large and ruptures or spreads. Symptoms may include: loss of appetite, instability, fatigue, weakness, pale gums, or sudden collapse.
X-rays and ultrasounds will show the size and location of a mass, but this does not definitively tell you if your dog has cancer. The mass would have to be biopsied and evaluated by a pathologist. Surgery is the primary method of treating HSA and is often aggressive to remove all locally-affected tissue.
If your dog is exhibiting any of these signs, or if your primary care veterinarian has identified a mass for evaluation, the oncology service at Pet Emergency and Referral Center can help. 561-691-9999

Meet Ice, a male neutered 11 yr old pitbull who started vomiting in January. At that time, an ultrasound was performed, which showed a thickened and plicated duodenum (part of the small intestine), and incidentally, a thyroid mass.

If you’ve been following our page for a while, then you’ll remember his sweet face from October 2024 - when he chowed down on some BBQ and foreign material. Due to his history, it was decided to take Ice to surgery for a thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid) and exploratory laparotomy (abdominal surgery).

After Ice’s surgery, his owners patiently awaited the results of his thyroid and duodenal biopsies, which unfortunately returned as cancer - thyroid carcinoma and stromal sarcoma of the duodenum.

Our oncologist, Dr. Zaidi, started working with Ice immediately. Stromal sarcoma is rarely seen in the intestines. So much so, that Dr. Z herself had never seen a case prior to Ice - but thankfully that did not discourage our oncology team!

After 5 rounds of doxorubicin (chemotherapy), some expected ups and downs, and the most dedicated team, Ice has officially graduated from oncology!
