Hello, my horse peeps! EEE is in the state. WNV, too. Check your paperwork: horses vaccinated more than 6 months ago should be boostered. I just checked the weather, and there's no freeze on the horizon, so those nasty little buggers are still out and about. Please, please protect your horses! This is a terrible way to die.

ATTENTION HORSE PEOPLE!!!

The equine hospital at Louisiana State University has recently seen a spate of cases that may be botulism. Horses in other states have also been affected. The exact source is not yet clear, but alfalfa cubes sourcing alfalfa from Colorado is at the top of the list.

Many products list Western states alfalfa. If the state is not named, I would withhold that feed to be safe.

Hello, and welcome to the inaugural session of That's Not A Fungus!

Today: Rain Rot!

That's right, folks, it's NOT a fungus! Rain rot is caused by a bacteria known as Dermatophilus Congolensis. It's an obligate anaerobe, which means it must have an environment devoid of oxygen in order to live. That's why a rain slicked back is the chosen home for this little guy. If your horse has lesions on the belly or legs, and you think it's rain rot, it's likely not, as these areas don't get water logged enough to create the conditions needed.

The classic lesion is called a "paintbrush lesion" because it consists of a ring of hair that pulls out and and is held together at the base by crud. Like a tiny paintbrush. Also, it's painful!

What's your best defense? Grooming! A good currying will introduce oxygen to the skin, and do away with D. Congolensis.

A chronic case may require veterinary intervention.

The take home message here? Not a fungus. Groom your horse.
