💧🐾 Even in Cooler Weather, Hydration Still Matters! 🐾💧
Just because the temps are dropping in Pahrump, that doesn’t mean dehydration for our pets is off the table. In fact, dry desert air and lower humidity can make dehydration sneak up more easily than you’d think.
❗ Why Pets Can Get Dehydrated in Fall
Indoor heaters and dry air can sap moisture from the body.
Pets may drink less when it’s cooler, even though they still need fluids.
Animals eating dry kibble get less water from their food than those on wet or moisture-rich diets.
Activity, stress, illness, or medications can raise water needs.
🔍 Warning Signs to Watch For
Skin “tenting” (skin that stays lifted when pinched)
Dry, tacky gums
Lethargy or weakness
Sunken eyes
Decreased appetite or slower movements
If you see any of these, don’t wait — dehydration can progress quickly.
📊 What the Numbers Say
A resting dog typically needs 40–60 mL of water per kg of body weight per day.
wms.org
Dogs generally require about 1 oz of water per pound of body weight daily.
PetMD
Water makes up 70–80% of a pet’s body — losing just 10% can lead to serious problems.
