Bogie Hayes
2013 - 5/27/2026
“Our hearts are heavy here at the Charleston Dog Shelter as today was the day we said goodbye to our precious long-timer Bogie. None of us wanted this day to come. We love our long-timer dogs as our own and cry like babies when we lose them. Bogie had recently been diagnosed with cancer. We do what we can to treat them and keep them comfortable, but when we can no longer heal their bodies, we must heal them home 🌈
Bogie joined our shelter in 2013. He and his girlfriend Birdie were digging holes and chasing bunnies near Hole 9 at Little Creek Golf Course in Ratcliff. It was all fun and games until they started digging on the greens. At that point, it was time to go. My son Hayden, who was 16 at the time, was playing golf with his buddies when he discovered Bogie and Birdie were in danger of being removed from the course.
“Mom, you gotta come get these two dogs. They are digging on the greens and about to be in trouble with the management around here,” was the call I received. My son and his friends named them Bogie and Birdie. Birdie went on to be adopted by a loving gentleman where she was cherished for the rest of her life until she passed a couple of years ago. Bogie decided that the dog shelter and we volunteers would be his forever family, and that’s exactly the way it was from that day in 2013 until today. 🐾🤎🐾
Bogie chose us. He had many opportunities to choose other people who came to the shelter looking to adopt, but that was always a hard no with Bogie. He loved the shelter. He loved his fellow dog friends. He loved his Sunday and Tuesday romps outside the shelter facility with his good friend Shyla. He loved how we all loved him. He never wanted to leave, and we let him know each and every day that he could stay forever.
We will never forget this precious beagle/hound mix fella of ours. He has made an everlasting impression on our hearts that will go with each one of us for the rest of our lives. That’s how things work in animal rescue. These amazing little animals come into our lives and rescue us as much as we rescue them. Thank Heavens for that call that day. “Mom, you gotta come get these dogs.” We did indeed get a couple of wonderful little dogs…and enough love from one to last us a lifetime. RIP precious Bogie. We love you forever 🐾❤️🐾”
