I don’t know why, but the latest trend in multitasking involves walking your dog while looking at your phone!

Are we THAT addicted to, and consumed with, technology that we cannot give our best friends at least 10-15 minutes (and hopefully more) of our time?

Here are a few reasons to put your phone down on walks:

~ The most obvious of reasons…SAFETY! You need to see where you are going while you are supervising your pup’s activity! Falling off the curb and spraining your ankle is just not worth the funny video on YouTube, nor is a $1500 emergency vet bill when your pup ingests something poisonous in the grass! You also need to ensure that you are alerted to what is going on in the environment around you! Be on the lookout for cars, off-leash dogs, other humans etc and keep yourself AND your pup safe😜

~Your pup offers lots of communication cues while on leash! Talk to him/her, encourage sniffing, good choices, and offer directions in a friendly tone! I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that dogs make fantastic therapists! Tell your pup about your day! You’ll both feel better afterwards🥰

~Practice training or leash-walking skills! Purposeful training sessions should be short (less than 10 minutes at a time) so you can hone in on a specific skill and successfully end the session with your pup wanting more!

~Take a Break! We are so busy doing 1,000 things all day long! Ground yourself and take note of the sights, smells, and feeling of the world around you! Enjoy the quiet or bask in the busy of others while you and your pup head out for some self-care🧘🏽‍♀️

Enjoy your time with your dog(s)!

The 4th of July is so much fun, but it can also be a scary time for our pups! Check out some ways you can reduce stress around fireworks🐶🎆

Happy 4th of July🎉🇺🇸🥳❤️

This day is a day to celebrate our country’s freedom, but it doesn’t have to be a day that is scary for our dogs!

The number #1 piece of advice I can offer is to be prepared! You don’t have to go out and purchase all kinds of oils, meds, and new toys to get through the Holiday! A few easy tips like these should help make the celebrations a bit easier to handle!

*If the weather is suitable, get out for a nice walk or some physical exercise before the celebrations begin! When your pup has had some good, physical release of energy, move on to enrichment activities for the rest of the day!
*Get those Kongs and Lickimats ready! Have them in the fridge/freezer before you need them!
*Play music or have the TV on just a little louder than usual!
*Keep your pup safe inside! When you go out for potty breaks, put him/her on a leash EVEN IF YOU HAVE A FENCED-IN YARD! Dogs are very capable of jumping fences when they are scared, even if they have never jumped in the past! Check that your pup either has a valid registration tag on his/her collar or that his/her microchip is active!
*Hang out it the quietest room of the house and calmly give your pup the attention he/she needs! You cannot reinforce fear by being there for your dog! If your dog simply wants to lay under the bed, then allow that to happen and offer support and care when needed!
*Play! Get out those flirt poles and squeaky toys and enjoy some time with your pup!
*If you have a Thundershirt, and your dog does well with it on, use it! If your dog prefers to lay on your lap or enjoy a nice slight-pressured massage for reassurance, then do just that!
*If bath time is fun, give your pup a bath several hours before the celebrations begin and use a lavender-infused dog shampoo to promote calmness!

You know what your dog needs! Go with what you know! Making sure he/she is safe and happy is what we do on the daily, so being a little extra prepared is going to get you through these summer holidays without any added stress❤️

Question: Are trainer’s dogs well-behaved 100% of the time?

Answer: Of course not! No dog (or human, for that matter) is behaviorally perfect! This, in no way, means you have a “bad” dog!

I encourage my clients to determine what behaviors they feel they may need help with and we work on a training plan together (a positive plan built around what is best for the family and the puppy/dog.).
Behaviors can change for various reasons, so we need to be flexible and do some digging (the super-sleuthy kind) to help us understand the “why” before we can create or make changes to a training plan!

With that being said, my dogs may not always make the best choices, but they sure look cute doing so and are perfect for me in every way🤗🥰

Now, I must go figure out how to take that beautiful island down🤔😂

Dogs show us just how much they enjoy being with us every day!

But did you ever stop to consider what that looks like for YOUR pup?

Not all dogs like hugs and kisses! My dog love language is all kinds of affection. I’ve learned over the years to give space and ask for consent to pet! There are plenty of pups who adore it and there are those who like my company…from afar😂
As much as I love to “squish” their little faces, Mazie is really my only dog who loves all the physical love! And that’s ok! Humans tend to have different ways of showing their emotions and it’s up to us to find what works for our dogs🐶

Here are some fun ways you can connect with your furry friend without invading his/her space!

*Give your pup a fantastic bone or new toy with which to chew and play while you read a book! Sharing space doing what you love is great self-care for you both📖🦴

*Go for a walk together! Enjoy this unseasonably warm weather while your dog sniffs to his/her delight! Even if it’s cold, suit up and head to the mailbox together for some fresh air💌

*Take a nice car ride (if your pup enjoys the car, of course!). Stop at Starbucks for a nice coffee for you and a Pup Cup for your dog🚗☕️

*Play a game of fetch, tug, or hide-n-seek! Games are not only fun, but a great way to expend energy and build confidence while connecting with your dog🎾

Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our clients and their pups! Enjoy this time with your dogs❤️

Muzzle Myth…
Muzzles = Bad Dogs👎🏼🐶🙅🏾‍♂️

Murphy has never *needed* a muzzle, but why wait until you need something to learn how to use it🤷🏼‍♀️

Let’s dive in with a little backstory on why we use one and why I love muzzles🙌🏼
Addison’s Disease requires consistent blood work and monthly injections💉🩸
At the onset of his diagnosis, Murphy was constantly poked and prodded!
We felt it was best to muzzle him for the safety and comfort of everyone, including Murphy. I didn’t want him to be in pain and snap at the vet. Since this was going to be a long-term need, we were proactive in our approach, as opposed to reactive. Thankfully, we had already worked with our muzzle, so I wasn’t trying to cover his face and poke him with needles all in one fell swoop🦅

Teaching your puppy/dog how to wear a muzzle can be a lifesaver in an emergency (pain, injuries etc) but even for every day use if he/she loves to eat paraphernalia while on walks (🪱💩🦴🌾)

To this day, he’s never had any reaction at/towards the vet (other than some anxiety around being cooped up in a room with the door closed, which we try to manage for him) but we still muzzle Murphy because it’s what he knows and, if you watch the video, he loves throwing his mug in there for treats! We do it much like you see here, so if he pulls back, we stop what we are doing. I no longer have to fully attach the muzzle, but can if needed.

We work with his muzzle frequently to keep the expectations and comfort levels balanced and fun! Murphy knows that muzzle = treats and NOT 💉 because we work on it so often. If I only brought out the muzzle on injection days (which we now do ourselves,) there would be a different reaction for sure! This video is a quick view into an unplanned session and how quickly Murphy responds to its presence. There were many slow, progressive training sessions that went into what you see today! Some pups will need more, others may need less! Cooperative Care is so important when building trust around husbandry work like nails, grooming, and vet visits🧑🏻‍⚕️

They are used for many reasons, but if you see a dog with a muzzle, please do not assume there is an aggressive beast inside!
