Muzzle Myth…
Muzzles = Bad Dogs👎🏼🐶🙅🏾♂️
Murphy has never *needed* a muzzle, but why wait until you need something to learn how to use it🤷🏼♀️
Let’s dive in with a little backstory on why we use one and why I love muzzles🙌🏼
Addison’s Disease requires consistent blood work and monthly injections💉🩸
At the onset of his diagnosis, Murphy was constantly poked and prodded!
We felt it was best to muzzle him for the safety and comfort of everyone, including Murphy. I didn’t want him to be in pain and snap at the vet. Since this was going to be a long-term need, we were proactive in our approach, as opposed to reactive. Thankfully, we had already worked with our muzzle, so I wasn’t trying to cover his face and poke him with needles all in one fell swoop🦅
Teaching your puppy/dog how to wear a muzzle can be a lifesaver in an emergency (pain, injuries etc) but even for every day use if he/she loves to eat paraphernalia while on walks (🪱💩🦴🌾)
To this day, he’s never had any reaction at/towards the vet (other than some anxiety around being cooped up in a room with the door closed, which we try to manage for him) but we still muzzle Murphy because it’s what he knows and, if you watch the video, he loves throwing his mug in there for treats! We do it much like you see here, so if he pulls back, we stop what we are doing. I no longer have to fully attach the muzzle, but can if needed.
We work with his muzzle frequently to keep the expectations and comfort levels balanced and fun! Murphy knows that muzzle = treats and NOT 💉 because we work on it so often. If I only brought out the muzzle on injection days (which we now do ourselves,) there would be a different reaction for sure! This video is a quick view into an unplanned session and how quickly Murphy responds to its presence. There were many slow, progressive training sessions that went into what you see today! Some pups will need more, others may need less! Cooperative Care is so important when building trust around husbandry work like nails, grooming, and vet visits🧑🏻⚕️
They are used for many reasons, but if you see a dog with a muzzle, please do not assume there is an aggressive beast inside!
