Did you know the Leptospirosis vaccine is now another core vaccine? 💉
Along with Rabies and DAPP, AAHA guidelines also designated the Lepto vaccine as a core vaccine earlier this year. Any dog that goes outdoors, no matter if in a rural or urban setting, can be exposed to leptospirosis. It is a waterborne bacterial disease that can be potentially deadly. It can cause symptoms like fevers, kidney failure, liver failure, and even death.
This disease is zoonotic, and can therefore be spread between humans and animals. It is spread in the urine of wild animals and can live in most vegetation, soil, and water. It can also be spread through bite wounds or if a dog digests infected tissue. 🐭🦊🐶
The first Lepto vaccine can be given at 12 weeks of age or older. The first doses are administered 3-4 weeks apart, no matter the dog’s age, and then boostered annually.
