Spring is almost here! Which means…it's time to schedule your equine companion to receive their spring vaccinations!

If you are wondering what vaccinations your equine friend should receive, the answer is — There are no “one size fits all” vaccine recommendations. A veterinarian who knows your animal and your management system is your best resource to recommend what vaccines your equine should receive and with what frequency!

While vaccination does not prevent disease in all circumstances, a good immunization protocol minimizes the risk of infection and remains an essential component of responsible ownership. A vaccination appointment is also the perfect opportunity for a yearly check-up of your equine friend and a great way to catch any health concerns early.

If you have yet to contact your veterinarian about scheduling vaccinations, we encourage you to do it soon!

Following Sunday nights episode of Yellowstone, we wanted to make sure that our clients were well informed on the appropriate administration routes for the commonly used anti-inflammatory, banamine. Please see the post below for more information!

With the hit TV show airing on Sunday, we have to address some mis-information during an early scene in the most recent episode.
💉💉💉
Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine) should NEVER be administered via Intra-muscular (IM) injection in a horse! Always administer Intravenously (IV) or Orally.
🦠🦠🦠
Given IM, Banamine can cause Clostridial Myositis, a severe bacterial infection at the injection site that can cause pain, heat, swelling and crepitus on palpation. These horses often have a fever, are depressed and very sick.
🩺💊🐴
Treatment should include aggressive antibiotics and debridement of the abscesses. These horses often require hospitalization with intensive care.

If your horse becomes ill for any reason and could possibly need treatment with banamine, please seek help from your veterinarian for proper administration!

✨CASE SPOTLIGHT✨

🌻Everyone meet Daisy, a Belgian mare who was bought at auction severely underweight. Her dedicated new owners had us out for a check and we found some significant dental abnormalities.

🦷Three extractions and a float later… look at her now! With a new diet and lots of love at her new home, she is thriving.

🩺 As the chill slowly sets in the air, make sure you give us a call for your fall floats and physicals!
