Do you have a dog who has a dark spot of oily spot at the base of his tail? This spot is called the Violet gland. Or do you have a dog suffering from environmental allergies? Here are natural remedies than can address these environmental changes in our dogs.
ALLERGIES AND LEAKING VIOLET GLAND IN DOGS
What is the Violet Gland?
The supracaudal gland (also called the violet gland) is located at the base of a dog's tail and is responsible for producing secretions that contribute to the dog's scent.
Leaking supracaudal gland: (Image of Supracaudal gland included below/dark spot at the base of the tail.) Mildly affected dogs may not need any treatment, as it is primarily a cosmetic issue of a bald spot. You can keep the area clean with degreasing shampoos that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or other anti-seborrheic ingredients, as needed.
Antibiotic creams or ointment can be used for mild infections. More severe infections may need oral antibiotics. Ideally, the selection of antibiotics is based on the results of a bacterial culture. If there is significant inflammation, topical or oral corticosteroids such as prednisone may be prescribed. If your dog is chewing the tail, he will need to wear an e-collar, as the repeated trauma will not allow healing.
Addressing allergies naturally: Quercetin: “Nature’s Benadryl.”
Quercetin helps manage allergic reactions in dogs by naturally reducing histamine levels, easing symptoms like itching and irritation on a dog's skin. It also has anti-cancer properties and can limit cancer cell growth, making it a versatile supplement for overall health.
Black seed oil/Nigella Sativa: (Caution: Black cumin seed oil and cake are toxic to cats because, unlike horses and dogs, they cannot fully metabolize bitter compounds.)
Black Seed oil also acts as an Antihistamine which helps to reduce the allergy sufferer's negative symptoms. Thymoquinone has excellent anti-inflammatory and Analgesic effects. Black seed oil has been shown to effectively kill adult fleas and larvae. Black seed oil is also believed to have insecticidal properties that disrupt flea development and reproduction.
Black cumin (nigella sativa) is not the same seed as our brown cumin spice (cuminum cyminum) in our common household spice of today.
Black seeds (Nigella sativa), which are totally unrelated to (C. cyminum), have nevertheless taken the name ‘Black cumin’ and are used in traditional systems of medicine for many disorders. Numerous pre-clinical and clinical trials have investigated its efficacy using the seed oil, essential oil, and its main constituent thymoquinone (TQ). These investigations support its use either independently or as an adjunct along with conventional drugs in respiratory problems, allergic rhinitis, dyspepsia, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory diseases, and different types of human cancer. Multiple studies made in the last decades validate its health beneficial effects particularly in diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, respiratory disorders, inflammatory diseases, and cancer. Nigella sativa seeds also possess immune stimulatory, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, and neuroprotective activities. TQ is the most abundant constituent of volatile oil of N. sativa seeds, and most of the medicinal properties of N. sativa are attributed mainly to TQ. All the available evidence suggests that TQ should be developed as a novel drug in clinical trials.
