HERBICIDES for POISON HEMLOCK
Non-Selective Herbicides.
Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that kills all vegetation, including poison hemlock. It is most effective when applied to actively growing plants before they bolt. It is rainfast within 2 hours and can achieve up to 95% control of poison hemlock, but care must be taken to avoid desirable plants.
Selective Herbicides.
For areas with desirable grasses or crops, broadleaf-specific herbicides are recommended. Fertilome and Trimec are effective on seedlings and rosettes, sparing grasses while targeting poison hemlock.
Application Timing.
Apply herbicides in the fall to first year plants for maximum effectiveness. Apply in spring before the plant grows too large and bolt. Herbicide coverage is more effective and requires less product than treating mature flowering plants.
Always follow label directions for rates, mixing, and personal protective equipment. Avoid spraying near water bodies unless the product is labeled for aquatic use. Do not spray in windy or rainy conditions and avoid cutting treated plants for at least two weeks. Spot treatments are recommended for light infestations to minimize herbicide use and protect non-target plants.
Combining chemical control with mechanical removal (cutting before seeding) enhances long-term management and reduces the risk of re-infestation. Early identification and timely herbicide application are key to effective poison hemlock control.
Shop Hamilton’s of Ortonville, 465 Mill Street, downtown for herbicides.
