It is with bittersweet feelings that we announce our sweet and resilient Gem (3.5yr Shepherd/Husky) is now adoptable ❤️
For those of you who are new, Gem has been through significant abuse. Months ago, she was in unstable condition. She was starved nearly to death (25lbs), anemic and was unable to stand or lift her head. She was admitted into the emergency vet and needed blood transfusions, tube feeding and various other vital care.
To be transparent, after all she has been through, we were planning on keeping this lovely lady in our sanctuary crew. However, we will always do what’s right for our animals. As much as she loves it here and loves her sanctuary siblings, we strongly feel like she will truly blossom in a family who is able to give her their undivided attention and support. With this being said, we are so glad we were able to be apart of her journey to recovery.
Gem is looking for a very experienced and patient family. She is still working through some trauma and has some behaviors associated with this. At this stage in her recovery, she can not be left unattended unless crated. She is still quite ravenous and will eat anything (edible or not) in sight. At times, she can demand bark in anticipation for food. She would not be a good candidate for apartment living at this time. Gem has had to relearn her house manners and has mastered going potty outside and basic commands! Being on a strict schuedule and having consistent training will be important moving forward, so she can stay on the right track.
Gem would thrive in a home with an active family who can continue working with her on her manners. She would love a fenced yard and a doggy sibling. She would do well with older children but due to her current manners, young children may not be the best idea. In the past, Gem struggled when meeting new people (not aggressive but very shut down and scared). With being so food motivated now, meeting new people has been easier for her the past few months. We are unsure whether this will remain the case when she is feeling 100% again.
Her adoptive family must be willing to remain in contact with us. Not only so we can help aid her rehabilitation, but also so we can continue making progress on her legal case.
