This week: April

April joined our team in October 2023, bringing with her over 17 years of experience working with animals. Raised in the Dallas area, April began her career on a dairy farm in North Dakota, where her passion for animal care truly took root. She transitioned from livestock to companion animal care, where she has continued to grow her career in the veterinary field.
As Practice Manager, April is dedicated to supporting both the medical team and our clients to ensure every patient receives exceptional care. One of her favorite parts of the job is helping cats feel more comfortable during their visits—especially by offering Churu treats to turn a potentially stressful experience into a positive one. Cats are her favorite species, and she has a special place in her heart for feline patients.
April has two black-and-white cats, Moo and Elsie, inspired by her large animal roots, who keep her entertained. In her free time, she and her husband enjoy exploring the outdoors or relaxing at Lake Erie.

Ever wonder how our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) process works? Here’s a look at how we help care for community cats while humanely managing the local stray population:

1️⃣ Stray cats are safely trapped.
2️⃣ We check for an ear tip, which tells us if a cat has already been spayed or neutered.
3️⃣ Cats are brought to our clinic for care.
4️⃣ They are gently sedated while still in the trap to minimize stress.
5️⃣ We check for a previous spay tattoo and scan for a microchip.
6️⃣ Each cat receives pain medication for comfort.
7️⃣ The surgical area is shaved and prepared.
8️⃣ Cats are spayed or neutered.
9️⃣ An ear tip/notch is placed to identify them as altered in the future.
🔟 Spayed females receive a tattoo as an additional marker.
1️⃣1️⃣ As they wake up, they receive a rabies vaccine.
1️⃣2️⃣ They are treated with Revolution for flea and tick prevention.
1️⃣3️⃣ We monitor their temperature and recovery closely.
1️⃣4️⃣ Cats are returned to their covered trap with a blanket for a calm, peaceful recovery.
1️⃣5️⃣ They stay overnight to begin healing and are then released back to their familiar outdoor home.

TNR helps improve the lives of community cats while reducing overpopulation in a safe and compassionate way. We’re proud to be part of making a difference!

I (Dr. Fink) was asked about an ad promoting shirts for our orrville veterinary clinic alumni reunion. Please note, this is a scam. Somebody apparently is using our name to try to “fish” for contacts. Do not click on any link. While this is outside of our control, we want to inform people so that they ignore the message. I was advised that it shows up in your notifications and possibly in messenger.

Flea Prevention Isn’t Just for Summer!

Did you know fleas can be a problem all year long, not just in the warmer months? These tiny pests can live indoors, survive colder weather, and quickly turn into a big problem for both you and your pet.

Fleas don’t just cause itching—they can lead to skin infections, allergies, and even transmit diseases. The good news? Prevention is simple and effective when used consistently!

Keeping your pet on year-round flea prevention helps protect them (and your home) from unwanted infestations. Skipping even one month can give fleas the chance to sneak in and multiply fast.

Not sure which prevention is best for your pet? We’re here to help—just give us a call or stop by!

Your pet’s comfort and health start with prevention!
