Today is National Beach Day!! 🏖
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when taking your furry friend to the beach:
🌴Make sure to check the temperature of the sand to ensure it is safe for your pet's paws. Press the back of your hand on the sand, and if it is too hot for you then it is definitely too hot for your pet!
🌊 Don't let your dog drink salt water or eat sand. This could lead to severe stomach distress, dehydration, or dangerous intestinal blockages.
⛱ Set up a large umbrella, tent, or canopy so that your dog can cool down throughout the day.
🫧Be sure to rinse off salt water and sand to prevent any skin or paw irritation.

Did you know that Dalmatian puppies are born completely white and develop spots later?
Even though it may be hard to believe, Dalmatians are born completely white! Their signature spots don't start to develop until around 2 to 3 weeks of age. Once they start developing they will continue to do so for up to a year or more!

This week: Leah!

Meet Leah, RVT

Leah has been dedicated to the veterinary field since 2020 and has been part of our team since the very beginning—starting with Orrville Pet Spa & Resort in 2019 and transitioning to Orrville Veterinary Clinic 2020.

She’s passionate about continuously growing her skills and loves helping pet owners feel confident and supported in their pet’s care. Leah also takes pride in keeping client resources fresh, accurate, and up to date.

At home, Leah is kept busy by her two adorable poodles, Max (Mini Poodle) and Tess (Toy Poodle). Outside of work, you’ll often find her spending time with family on the farm, crocheting, enjoying photography, or soaking up the outdoors.

Fun fact: Leah is one of seven siblings and grew up on a dairy farm!

Her favorite breeds? Poodles (of course!) and Newfoundlands.
Three words that describe her: reflective, creative, and driven.

We’re so lucky to have Leah on our team! 💙

As kids are heading back to school, we wanted to remind you that this can be a big change for your pets as well! As routines change, a little extra support can help to make this an easier and less stressful transition for your pets.
Here are a few things that can help make the transition easier:
⏰ Ease into the new schedule by gradually changing meal, walk, or potty times.
🦴 Provide puzzle toys, chew toys, or other forms of enrichment to help prevent boredom.
🚶Try a walk or quick play session before everyone leaves to help burn off some energy.
🐾 Consider bringing your dog to doggy daycare at
Orrville Pet Spa & Resort to help provide socialization and mental/physical stimulation
🎶 Leave on soft music or a television for a comforting background noise
❤️ Watch for signs of stress such as excessive barking, pacing, destructive behaviors, or frequent accidents inside the house.
For many pets, summer is a time when their favorite people are home more often than normal. A quieter house can be a big change, but with a little preparation and patience, they'll have a smooth transition into their new routine as well!

⭐ Fun Fact Friday!! ⭐

Did you know that cats can't taste sweetness?

They actually have a genetic mutation that deactivates the key taste receptor needed to detect sugars.

This is mainly because in the wild, cats are strict carnivores and their natural diet contains no plants or sugars. Because of this, they never evolved the ability to taste sweet flavors!

Just one bite from an infected mosquito can transmit heartworms to dogs, and even cats. 🦟
At VWP, we recommend:
🐾Year-round heartworm prevention
🐾Annual heartworm testing
🐾Keeping all pets up to date on preventative care
Heartworm disease is preventable, and prevention is far easier, and much less expensive, than treatment!

This week: Jessi!

With 20 years of experience in veterinary medicine and three years as part of the team, Jessi brings a strong blend of knowledge, compassion, and creativity to her role as a Veterinary Assistant. From a young age, she knew she was meant to work with animals and has been following that passion ever since. Jessi is Fear Free Certified and is deeply committed to ensuring every patient feels safe, comfortable, and well cared for during their visit.
At home, she cares for a lively group of pets, including two dogs—a Boston/Beagle mix and a Pit/Husky mix—two cats, a Siamese mix and a bobtail mix, as well as a tank of guppies. Jessi especially enjoys helping clients better understand their pet’s needs and providing support during difficult moments, while also playing an important role in keeping hospitalized patients comfortable.
Outside of her veterinary work, she is a talented artist who enjoys painting, drawing, and encouraging creativity within her team. In her free time, Jessi can be found practicing yoga, watching anime, or spending time at the park with her dogs. Her favorite breed is the Corgi, and she is best described as fun, creative, and innovative, bringing both heart and talent to the team each day.
