no early spring this year. watching the extended forecast, and did not seed anything other than some apple seeds, and onions earlier. Today I finally started my peppers and tomatoes. Still driving big trucks on the lake here, so ice out is not going to be soon. Mid-May is likely when peppers and tomatoes will go into the ground.

Native bees are an unappreciated treasure, with 4,000 species from tiny Perdita to large carpenter bees, they can be found anywhere in North America where flowers bloom.

Most people don’t realize that there were no honey bees in America until the white settlers brought hives from Europe. These resourceful insects promptly managed to escape domestication, forming swarms and setting up housekeeping in hollow trees, other cavities or even exposed to the elements just as they had been doing in their native lands.

Native pollinators, in particular bees, had been doing all the pollination in this continent before the arrival of that import from the Old World. They continue to do a great deal of it, especially when it comes to native plants.

I did a seed order this year. Had not in a while. Sand Hill Preservation. As much to support Glenn Drowns as anything else. Any time I think I am trying to do too much, I look at what he does, and know I can do more.

Had to go buy a pair of insulated pants to work on trees yesterday. Dressed for what it was like at home, not for what it was like in the middle of a field going through seedlings.

Three big runs of apple sauce made it through the canner. Picked through the potatoes, pulled all the ones that I dont think will store well, packed them in quart jars with garlic and rosemary, and will have the second run in the canner as soon as it comes off pressure from the first.

Canner runs today. Apple sauce. 18 pints double stacked in there now, just came off heat and should be off pressure in about 50 minutes. 3 more runs to follow. Big pot of pork and veg stew on the stove for dinner. We will see how late a night I want to make it.
