CALLIE UPDATE Healing was the hope. Love, comfort, and support became her Christmas miracle. Now hospice. πβ€οΈ( this has been very difficult for our team please be gentle with us well we will welcome holistic suggestions by message privately)
Monday, a tiny fourteen pound Sheltie named Callie came into rescue, and in that very short time she completely took our hearts. What we expected to be a straightforward medical intake quickly turned into a whirlwind of vet visits, urgent decisions, and emotions we were not prepared for.
Callie arrived with severe infection, pain, and obvious long term neglect. We rushed her to the vet and began preparing for emergency dental surgery, believing we were finally going to fix what had been ignored for so long. Before anesthesia, an ultrasound was done to double check her bladder infection and rule out cancer we worry about in Shelties.
That ultrasound changed everything.
Callie has a large, aggressive Leiomyosarcoma mass in her diaphragm and small intestines. Because of the size and location of the tumor, combined with her infection and overall condition, she is not a candidate for surgery or cancer treatment. At this time, the vet does not feel she would survive anesthesia, so her dental has been placed on hold.
This is not a death sentence today.
This morning, after starting pain medication and antibiotics, Callie was brighter, happier, and very much herself. She trotted around the backyard, barked at everything like a true Sheltie πΎ, and soaked up the sunshine like she had nowhere else she needed to be. Watching her, we knew we made the right decision. She deserves the chance to truly live, even if her time ends up being shorter than we ever hoped.
Her Christmas miracle did not disappear. It simply changed.
We believed her miracle would be healing. Instead, it became hospice care filled with love, comfort, dignity, and support. Callie was likely loved once, long ago, before life failed her. Now she is safe again. Warm. Cherished. Heard. π
Our focus now is quality of life. We are treating her aggressively with antibiotics, anti inflammatory support, pain control, and vet approved holistic care. We have already purchased CBD oil to help with comfort and inflammation, and we are looking to add immune and probiotic mushroom support as well. Medical bills are still significant, and ongoing care is something we will continue to navigate.
Most of all, Callie is happy. She is eating well π², wagging her tail, giving kisses, and reminding us why rescue matters so deeply.
If you would like to help support Callie on this journey, whether through donations, wishlist items, cards, or simply sending love her way, we are deeply grateful. If you would like to send her a card, we would love to read them to her π.
For however long she has, Callie will know peace, comfort, and how deeply she is loved. That is her miracle. π
