We are very happy to share this great news from Wikiri Selva Viva:
"With enormous pride and pleasure we announce the first small group of captive bred Atelopus in the world. This offering represents 15 years of work, where our efforts to develop and improve husbandry have served multiple purposes. While we enjoy and greatly appreciate the support of hobbyists worldwide, our primary incentive for developing these techniques are far more urgent. As you may know, Ecuador has experienced unprecedented amphibian declines where the genus Atelopus has been among the most negatively impacted species. Our expeditions, also funded by the purchase of our captive bred offerings, have proven amazingly successful having rediscovered a number of species thought for decades to be extinct. With these fantastic finds comes the added pressure of having the opportunity to try to reproduce these species in captivity with the ultimate goal of reintroductions. Therefore with the purchase of these first offspring you are buying not only the past 15 years worth of work, but also helping to fund the next 15 years. As always, we greatly appreciate your continued support."
The first 3 groups of fully legal, sexed, captive bred Atelopus sp. 'Arlequín de Limon' will be available to the U.S. in our shipment planned for September 2017. They will be sold only in groups of 1.2 at $425 each ($1275 for each group of 1.2). These frogs are 8+ months post metamorphosis. We hope this is just the beginning of an exciting opportunity for amphibian enthusiasts to work with a whole new group of colorful tropical frogs while supporting the conservation that protects them.
