This is a dog’s bladder during surgery, called a cystotomy. It’s extremely swollen because urinary stones blocked the urethra, preventing urine from leaving the body. When this happens, the bladder continues to fill and stretch, creating a dangerous, painful, and potentially life threatening situation.

Dogs with urinary stones may strain to urinate, only pass small amounts, or stop urinating altogether. If a pet cannot urinate, it’s always an emergency that needs immediate veterinary attention. With surgery, like in this case, the stones can be removed and the bladder can return to normal function.

Regular checkups, urinalysis, and imaging are important tools to detect urinary stones early before they turn into a crisis.
