We missed "The Bird-Word" last week because, well... life happens! And sometimes, life brings you an 11-year-old Green Cheek Conure named Bobby. 🍍❤️

The Story:
Bobby joined the flock yesterday. He isn't a permanent resident, but he’s going to be a long-term guest of honor!

His family is dealing with a housing situation where they can't have him right now. So, for the next year or so, he is crashing at the "Budgies and Such" hotel until they are settled and ready to bring him home. 🏠

The Senior Citizen Club:
At 11 years old, Bobby has seen some things! He is settling in nicely and already scoping out the neighborhood. It is an honor to give this little guy a soft landing spot while his family gets things sorted.

👇 Give Bobby a warm welcome in the comments!

Welcome back to "The Bird-Word" (Vol. 7)!

At Budgies and Such, we generally try to avoid the really heated topics. You won't hear us arguing about politics or exactly when it's acceptable to start playing Christmas music. 🚫🎄

But today? Today we are diving straight into one of the most controversial debates in the bird world: The Diet.

The "Seed Ju**ie" Reality:
Most birds—whether they are budgies, cockatiels, or finches—love seeds. But an all-seed diet is high in fat and low in essential vitamins (especially Vitamin A). It’s basically like letting a toddler eat nothing but pizza and candy. 🍕🍬

The Golden Rule: Fed is Best.
While we always want to improve their nutrition, a bird eating seeds is infinitely better than a bird eating nothing.

Small birds have fast metabolisms and can be incredibly stubborn. Never try to force a diet change by removing their old food entirely ("cold turkey"). They will often choose to starve rather than eat something they don't recognize.

The Strategy: Persistence & Rotation

1. The "Scary Vegetable" Rule: You might need to offer a new food 10, 20, or even 30 times before they even touch it. Don't give up after one try! To them, that piece of broccoli might look like a scary monster at first.

2. Find Their "Healthy Addiction": Every flock is different. Rotate through different healthy options—peppers, kale, spinach, corn—until you find the one that "clicks." Once you find that gateway veggie, the rest gets easier!

👇 What is the one healthy treat your flock actually likes? Tell us below!

It’s National Bird Day! 🦜🐥

At Budgies and Such, we know that life is just better with feathers in it. And as you can see, we don't discriminate!

Whether your flock consists of a Lovebird that thinks it's a hat, a handful of baby chicks, or the classic Budgie crew—today is the day to celebrate them. They are our noise-makers, our mess-creators, and our best listeners.

Here is your official "Bird Day" To-Do List:
✅ The "Good" Snacks:
Break out the spray millet for the parrots and the mealworms for the chickens. Today is a cheat day!
✅ Spa Day:
Offer a fresh bath bowl, a misting session, or a fresh dust bath for the outdoor crew.
✅ The "Pep Talk":
Tell them they are a "pretty bird" (or a "good chicken") at least 50 times today. It’s mandatory.

👇 ROLL CALL:
We want to meet your flock! Drop a photo of your bird in the comments, or just tell us their name and species!

(Bonus points if you tell us their weirdest habit!)

Saturday Morning Nest Check! 🐣✨

It is wild to see the size difference just a few days makes. The little one is catching up, but the older sibling is already showing off some pin feathers!

The Mystery:
This is the very first clutch from these parents, so we have no history to go off of. I honestly don't know what we are going to get! 🤷‍♂️

👇 HELP ME OUT:
Based on the clip, what do you think the older one will be?

Let me know your guess in the comments!

Welcome back to "The Bird-Word" (Vol. 6)!

In the wild (and in the nest box), budgies have a built-in heater: Mom! Look at how she keeps those babies toasty.

But once they are in your home, keeping them warm is up to YOU.

The Myth: Budgies need tropical heat 24/7.
The Truth: They are hardy! While they prefer 70-75°F, they can handle cooler temps (down to 60-65°F) just fine if they are healthy.

The Real Enemy: DRAFTS.
Cold air isn't the main killer—moving air is. A draft from a leaky window or a door opening can drop a bird's body temperature instantly.

Your Winter Checklist:
1. Check the Cage: Is it near a drafty window or door? Move it!
2. Space Heater Warning: Be careful! Many space heaters use Teflon/PTFE coatings, which are lethal to birds if overheated. Safe oil-filled radiators are best.
3. Cover Up: A thicker blanket over the cage at night helps trap their body heat.

👇 How cold is it where you are right now? Drop a ❄️ if you're freezing!

Welcome back to "The Bird-Word" (Vol. 5)!
It’s time to deck the halls, but before you let your bird explore the holiday decor, there are a few hidden dangers to watch out for.

1. The Tree Itself:
Real trees can have sap (bad for feathers) or be sprayed with pesticides/preservatives. Artificial trees are generally safer, but watch out for "flocked" (fake snow) trees, which are toxic if eaten.

2. The "Shiny" Traps:
Budgies LOVE shiny things. Tinsel and ribbon are major entanglement hazards. Glass ornaments can shatter easily if pecked.

3. The #1 Hazard: Electrical Cords:
Tree lights mean extra cords on the floor. One bite through a live wire can be fatal instantly. Keep cords covered or birds strictly supervised!

4. Toxic Holiday Plants:
Keep these far away from the cage:
-Holly & Mistletoe (Highly Toxic)
-Poinsettias (Irritating/Toxic)
-Yew & Ivy

Safe Alternatives:
Make "bird-safe" ornaments out of paper, cardboard, or bird-safe wood so they can join in the fun!

Definition of a "Velcro Bird": A bird that must be attached to you at all times. 🙋‍♂️

We know we aren't the only ones! Whether they are on your shoulder, your head, or your laptop keyboard... we want to see your "supervisors."

This week, we're feeling extra thankful for our little feathered friends. They bring so much noise, chaos, and joy into our lives! 🧡

(And apparently, a complete lack of personal space. I've officially accepted my new job as a heating pad for the chicks. 😂)

This week of Thanksgiving, we want to know: What is ONE thing you are thankful for about your bird(s)?

Is it the cuddles? The funny songs? The way they "help" you work? Let's fill the comments with something positive! 👇

Welcome back to "The Bird-Word" (Vol. 4)!

With Thanksgiving next week, the kitchen is about to get busy. A bird's respiratory system is extremely sensitive, and many common holiday things can be deadly.

Here is your Pre-Thanksgiving Safety Checklist:

1. THE #1 DANGER: Non-Stick Fumes (PTFE)
When non-stick cookware (Teflon™, air fryers, baking sheets) is overheated, it releases odorless fumes that are lethal to birds. Even self-cleaning oven cycles are toxic.

2. Scented Hazards
We all love a festive smell, but stay away from:
Scented candles & wax melts
Essential oil diffusers
Aerosol air fresheners
Smoke from burnt food

3. The "No-Share" Foods
Keep the feast to yourself! Birds should strictly avoid:
Onions & Garlic
Chocolate
Alcohol
Avocado (Highly toxic!)
Salty/Fatty foods

The Safest Plan:
The best place for your bird on Turkey Day is in a separate, well-ventilated room, far away from the kitchen chaos and fumes.
We want everyone to have a safe and happy holiday with their whole flock!
Please SAVE this post and SHARE it to help keep birds safe this holiday!

Welcome back to "The Bird-Word" (Vol. 3)!

This video of our two chicks (with their 2-week age gap!) got us thinking: Just how fast do budgie chicks grow?
It's one of the most explosive growth spurts in the animal kingdom!

At Hatching (Day 1): A baby budgie is blind, naked, and weighs only about 1-2 grams. (Less than a paperclip!)

One Week Old (Day 7): Their eyes are opening, and they've already multiplied their birth weight many times over.

Two Weeks Old (Day 14): They have their first "pin feathers" and look like our older chick.

Three-Four Weeks Old: They're almost fully feathered!

This explosive growth is common in many small parrot species. It's a race to get big, strong, and ready to leave the nest, which they often do at only 30-40 days old. It's amazing to watch!

What's your favorite part of watching a baby bird grow up? Let us know in the comments!

Surprise! Our "solo chick" isn't solo anymore. 🐣
A new sibling just hatched, a full 2 weeks later! Just look at that size difference. So happy this little one has arrived safely.

Welcome back to "The Bird-Word" (Vol. 2)!

Ever hear your budgie make a quiet, scratchy, grinding sound, especially when they're sleepy? Good news!

That's called "beak grinding," and it's the parrot equivalent of purring. It's one of the best sounds you can hear, as it means your bird is completely relaxed, content, and feels safe in its surroundings.

And this isn't just a budgie quirk! It's a very common behavior in the parrot world. From cockatiels to conures and even large macaws, many parrots grind their beaks when they are feeling happy and getting ready for a nap.

Other great signs of a relaxed bird include fluffing up their feathers, standing quietly on one foot, or making soft, happy chirps.

How can you tell when YOUR bird is relaxed? Let us know in the comments!
