What an incredible advocate for the Thoroughbred. Sue Lyman was my mentor for five years while I lived in Virginia. She taught me how to ride this breed lightly and take away the anxiety created by riders both on the track and in the arena. This is why I now specialize in helping riders with their Thoroughbreds. Thanks to Sue’s tutelage and her advocacy of the Thoroughbred!

Sue Lyman piloted Kensington Court to a win in the inaugural $25,000 Upperville Thoroughbred Hunter Derby on Tuesday. Their names will be the first etched on the trophy, which fittingly was sculpted by Lyman herself. The rider, who is also an accomplished artist, designed it in the likeness of her Thoroughbred stallion, Simbalu—Lyman's horse of a lifetime.

“I've always had a Thoroughbred,” she said. “I had a couple of warmbloods for a couple years, but then when I slowed down, all I had were Thoroughbreds. This is all I want to ride, because they go the way like to ride. I don't want to have to hold contact, worry about swapping off the leads—these horses just find the jumps.”
