What is Patellar Luxation?
The patella, or kneecap, is part of the stifle joint (knee). In patellar luxation, the kneecap luxates, or pops out of place, either in a medial or lateral position. Bilateral involvement is most common, but unilateral is not uncommon. Classifying the degree of luxation and bony deformity is useful for diagnosis. Grades are assigned 1-4 in severity. Diagnosis is made upon physical evaluation by a veterinarian and can be submitted to the OFA for dogs that are a minimum of 12 months of age (or

*****Seeking New Home*****
This boy, whom we call Four, is now seeking his forever home. We acquired him due to him being dumped on 4th Ave in front of our clinic. It's heartbreaking to watch someone open their car door and pull their pet out, leaving them scared and unsure why their humans discarded them like trash to fend for themselves. Fortunately, he landed in better hands than his previous "caretakers." He may be best placed in a single-pet home. We have not tested him with other dogs, cats or children. He would love someone to play fetch with him; he may also make a great running partner. Four has been vaccinated and neutered. If interested in Four, please reach out to our office or email with questions at [email protected].

Did you know? Dogs must be 24 months or older for OFA Hip and Elbow certification, and 12 months or older for Cardiac, Patellas, and Thyroid certification. There is no age minimum for eye certification, nor for DNA, since DNA does not change as the dog ages.

The OFA also does Preliminary evaluations on hips and elbows before 24 months of age. However, they will need to be re-evaluated again for a final certification once the dog reaches 24 months.

Individual breeds may have different minimum age requirements for their CHIC program, which is determined by their parent club.
