Brushing your long-haired dog properly is essential to prevent matting. Long-haired dogs need regular maintenance and brushing to avoid issues like matting, skin irritation, hot spots, and skin infections. Frequent brushing also helps prevent the pain that can arise from matting pulling on their skin.
When brushing, it's best to use a combination of a pin brush, a slicker brush, and a comb. While you can get by with just a slicker brush and a comb, I personally find that a pin brush is really helpful as well. Start by working in sections, beginning at the legs and moving up toward the head. This method makes it easier to manage the hair.
As you brush, lift the hair and part it into small sections. Use your comb to work through the hair, and if you come across a knot, the pin brush or slicker can help untangle it. I like to use the pin brush first because itβs gentler and great for dealing with tangles, while the slicker brush is better for tough knots or mats.
Continue this process up the leg, keeping the brushed sections separate from the unbrushed ones. For long-haired dogs, brushing 2-3 times a week is necessary to prevent matting. Remember, matting can lead to serious issues, and the most common solution is shaving your pet down short. If you want to maintain that long, fluffy look, youβve got to put in the effort.
Just like humans ideally brush their hair daily, long-haired dogs should be brushed every day too, or at least 2-3 times a week. It's not uncommon for groomers to recommend a vet visit after a shave due to matting, mainly because matting can lead to skin infections, hidden ear infections, or even hematomas from restricted circulation. So, while matting might seem trivial, it can actually have significant consequences.
