Zoey’s owners weren’t sure if she’d ever be able to go out in public (politely), let alone, work side by side a dog she hardly knows. They’d been to multiple other trainers, and spent thousands of dollars on Zoey’s reactivity.
Here she is today, after only a couple weeks with me. We’ve built on the commands she knew. Solidifying them. Closing loopholes. Learning her manipulation tactics.
She’s the dog that can sniff everyone’s butt, but heaven forbid they do it back.
Her reactivity isn’t aggression. It’s lack of confidence and knowing how to prioritize energy.
Many people come to me with “aggressive” dogs. And truth be told, they’re not. They’re misunderstood.
Because of the misunderstanding, along with misinformation, owners become worried, tense, and fearful. These human reactions ONLY fuel a dogs own anxiety. It puts them in a position of fear and need to protect themselves and owner.
Reactivity stems from lack of impulse control. They’ve never learned how to think things through before they act.
The top 2 commands needed for dogs like Zoey are:
#1 leave it
#2 stay
Zoey thrives working with a confident handler and other confident dogs. Chevy was an amazing coach this morning!
I have been stumped, because I had YET to see what her owners explained. I finally did. At the end of our session, we came across 2 dogs nobody had ever met.
Zoey had just found comfort working with Chevy inside tractor supply.
These dogs and their presence ripped that comfort from underneath of her. And her mom. I was so happy to see it!!!!!!
We worked through it, and Zoey very quickly settled with both dogs. Mom and dad got new tools in their box. And over the next 2 weeks, we’ll be working hard on recreating those events to teach Zoey and her parents how to be confident in themselves with said tools.
