Sisters cuties finally figured out the doggy door so they could go play in the puppy play yard. What was the first thing they did? Dig holes of course! They are 100% Dachshund 🤣

Sisters littles are full of sass and fluff. This is my favorite age so clumsy and adorable just learning to wrestle and explore. Those who are getting to watch them on the live puppy cam know what a riot they are. Several reservations open still.
New pics just got uploaded here is a sneak peek of these little cuties you can see more of on our website.

At 4 weeks Sister's litter has graduated to weaning mode. Sister who has free access to come and go from the nursery has been sleeping on my bed (which overlooks the nursery) for longer periods since her pups discovered her kibble. She still goes in for frequent feedings but does not stay for more than that.

Part of weaning is also the beginning of crate and potty box training. The pups now sleep in a crate that opens out to a potty box filled with Timothy hay pellets.
The grass smell is a natural attractant to dogs for pottying. Some people use pine or Alfalfa in thier litter boxes which also work but are not my preference. Timothy is much lower sugar than alfalfa as well as digestable (pine is not) in case of ingestion by pups. It is also not as strong smelling as alfalfa or pine.
Using this method pups natural instinct to leave the nest (crate) to potty coupled with a natural smelling substrate is the first step in teaching them outside is the place to potty.

Over the years we have tried MANY different methods of potty training our pups. My two most favorite for ease and time are the litter box and however in our current setup I do not have the space or electric access to use the brilliantpad where the nursery is in the center of my room.

Many people say potty training Dachshunds is difficult or impossible. This is untrue if thier breeder starts them correctly and thier new family follows thru with the same method.
It is vital that training is started around 4-5 weeks before eating kibble starts in earnest.
Whatever type of flooring the pups encounter when they first start leaving the nest is what they will seek to potty for the rest of thier life.
Pups raised those first weeks on newspaper will forever seek out any papers on the floor.
Those raised on potty pads will forever struggle with pottying on cloth.
The same goes for concrete or linoleum making sidewalks or kitchen floors hot spots.
The easiest way I have found in 30 years of raising Dachshunds to help pups successfully transition to outside pottying is litter trays. This method also easily adapts to bark, or grass potties for apartment dwellers.

It was a rough day for the older pups destroying the indoor playroom since it was raining outside. Wore themselves right into a puppypile.
