And the best way to prevent kittens being born in the streets is to spay and neuter!

As the weather warms, you are more likely to encounter kittens outdoors. But if their mother is with them, please...Leave Them Be.

This best practice allows the mother cat, kittens' best possible caregiver, to care for her kittens in their outdoor home. They should not be separated if kittens are under 8 weeks old (at minimum).

🌟 Save a Life by Adopting a Working Cat from the Nebraska Humane Society! 🌟

Shelters can be incredibly stressful for outdoor cats, who often struggle to adjust to confined spaces and loud environments. For these cats, being adopted as a working cat is their only chance at a better life, where they can thrive in a natural setting and find a true sense of purpose.

By adopting a working cat, you're not only giving them a second chance—you're helping them escape the stress of shelter life and providing a safe, outdoor environment where they can use their natural skills. Whether it’s a barn, warehouse, or large property, these independent cats are experts at pest control and will love having a job to do.

✅ Help a cat escape the stress of the shelter ✅ Provide natural, humane pest control ✅ Rewarding companionship for the right environment ✅ A life-saving opportunity for outdoor cats

Give a working cat the freedom and purpose they deserve. If you are interested in adopting our NHS working cats, please fill out an application here https://www.nehumanesociety.org/adopt/cats/working-cats/working-cats.html! 🐾❤️

NHS provides free spay and neuter services for community cats in the Omaha metro area! Contact NHS to receive information on how to get community cats altered! 😸

Community cats are generally not socialized to people or adoptable. In shelters without lifesaving programs, these cats could be killed. In any shelter environment, community cats are highly stressed and very susceptible to disease.

A community cat should only enter an animal shelter as part of TNR. In some TNR programs, cats are spayed or neutered at the shelter’s clinic!

This is such a great collaboration! If you are unable to purchase traps, you can borrow them from Stray to Spay and bring the cats to NHS to be altered! 😻

Happy Monday! We’ve got an exciting update to share with all of you. With ’s Community Cat Program up and running, we have updated our request form to include requests for traps only!

Why? Well for starters, we cannot handle all of the requests we get. We need to leverage every possible resource in the community because we have limited resources. Also, it should go without saying (but we’ll say it), NHS’s Community Cat program can be the difference maker. This is the resource we’ve been waiting for and now it is here so we need to use it. They have a website with all relevant information, but essentially this can be a quicker way for community caretakers to get their cats neutered. To help facilitate this process, we are going to loan community caretakers traps that can be used for a limited time to get TNR’d through NHS. The trap program is just what it says. We loan the traps caretakers do the rest of the work. Cats benefit.

Although not cat related, we want to make sure our canine friends are healthy too. Please make sure to vaccinate your furry friends!

Hey y'all. We need to talk about something that we've been seeing a lot of recently: Canine Parvovirus, also known as "Parvo".

Parvo is highly contagious and particularly dangerous. The virus is also quite hardy, as it can survive for weeks, months, and even years on certain surfaces.

Left untreated, over 90% of cases end in death, typically within 48-72 hours after the first symptoms occur.
Treatment can be tricky and often includes several days of intensive care, which quickly becomes expensive. To put the cost into perspective, Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue, Inc has taken in 29 cases this year and has spent over $125k just on treatment.

We aren't trying to scare you. In fact, as long as your dog is up to date on vaccines, there is hardly cause for concern. Parvo cases in fully vaccinated dogs is incredibly rare. But NHS and other organizations are seeing an uptick in illness in owned dogs in the metro area, especially puppies and unvaccinated adult dogs that visit dog parks and other dog-friendly spaces.

Please, vaccinate your dogs. Tell your friends to vaccinate their dogs. Tell your neighbors to vaccinate their dogs. Muddy Paws Second Chance Rescue, Inc is hosting a FREE vaccine clinic this weekend, and various organizations including NHS offer similar clinics several times throughout the year. Every vaccine counts.

A great compilation of some of our recent cat releases. These cats love to “get away” from the traps and get back to where they came from!

Do you often spot cats roaming your neighborhood or care for a colony of community cats? If so, the Nebraska Humane Society has an amazing program just for you! The Community Cat Program is here to help you humanely manage and support these furry wanderers through altering and vaccinating 🐱✨

What is the Community Cat Program?
- This program is designed to assist in reducing the community cat population. The process is simple: cats are brought in from members of the public, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear tipped, and then returned to their original location.

Why Participate?
- Help Decrease Overpopulation 📉: Unaltered cats can rapidly multiply, leading to large colonies. By participating, you help curb the growth of these populations.
- Improve Cat Health 🩺: Vaccinated cats are healthier and less likely to spread diseases among themselves and to pet cats.
-Reduce Nuisance Behaviors 🚫: Spayed or neutered cats are less likely to exhibit disruptive behaviors like spraying, yowling, and fighting.

How Can You Get Involved?
1. Become a Colony Caretaker: If you're already feeding and looking after a group of cats, NHS can provide the support needed to get them altered and vaccinated.
2. Report Roaming Cats: Even if you're not caring for a colony, you can still help! Notify NHS about community cats in your area, and we'll guide you through the process of humane trapping and bringing the cats in to be altered and vaccinated.

Get Started Today!
