Happy Friday! And more importantly, happy Juneteenth!

Yes, we are a cat rescue and that’s our primary focus. But as an institution that works with the public to help community cats, we meet so many different people with diverse backgrounds and stories, we would be entirely remiss if we did not acknowledge this important historical day.

Cat overpopulation is an issue throughout our community and we believe that everybody who wants to help cats is a true hero and all humans deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. We get to travel across Omaha and meet with so many wonderful people, we appreciate our community so much.

There’s always that one kid who acts goofy during the school pictures! The kid in this picture is Boss, previously known as Bess.

Boss and his sister Cora would like you all to know that they were still pretty small kittens when we got them, and yet they absolutely positively did everything in their power to resist being socialized. Unfortunately, our fosters prevailed and these two cuties are destined for a life inside!

Unfortunately, the sad reality is we can’t do this for every kitten. It’s not only a question of space. In peak kitten season, it gets harder and harder to justify the time it takes to socialize kittens that are more than 2 pounds because we can so easily rescue kittens that are even smaller along with their mamas (who will either get adopted if they are friendly, or will be spayed and returned once they’re done weaning their babies). It doesn’t mean we won’t try to help, but what it means is that when people email us asking us to take kittens we have a lot of questions to get a sense of how much work it will take to get the kittens ready for a life inside.

This is why TNR is just so important!

Each and every time a trap snaps shut, it means a better future for the cat inside.

That *snap* means a longer life and less suffering.
It means freedom from reproductive urges and not having to contribute to cat overpopulation outdoors or in shelters. It means more wildlife saved, and less disease spread.
It means fewer injuries and fewer battles over territory.
It means kittens won't be born just to starve to death.

That one little snap is a win for everyone, across the board.

As one of our volunteers put it, "I just love this feeling" ♥️

All right, this is for all of our friends in Council Bluffs, Iowa! Your city counselors are going to talk about TNR again on June 22. We have collected stories and photos from community members and are putting together a report to dispute the claim that there is not a community cat problem the city.

Once we have the report finished, we’re happy to share, and in the meantime, we’ll see you at City Hall at 7 PM on Monday, June 22!

Thanks to all who participated in and helped with our golf tournament over the weekend! Events help us raise much needed funding for community cats who need rescue and care. We believe they all deserve help - from the biggest, meanest tomcats, to the smallest, most innocent of kittens (like this one).

The weather started off a little bit dramatic for our Par for Paws fundraiser, but that’s OK! A little rearranging of the schedule and the golfers have finally hit the course! We are so grateful for our wonderful community and our heartland hardiness.

All proceeds from this event directly support cats from our community!

Our golf tournament, Par for the Paws, is right around the corner! This wonderful tournament would not be possible without the dedication of our good friend and fellow cat lover, and OG volunteer, Karla, along with the following most excellent sponsors:

Crescent Moon The Bellevue Berry Farm The Grand Feline Hotel & Salon Tressler Vineyard Harwood Services, CNC Surveying, abc Printing, Kerry Sparks Acadian Grille & Bar The Fuel Bar Ralston Scissori’s Salon, Idea Printing, T & K Printing, Quandt Classic, Woof & Whiskers

Every dollar we raise through these kinds of fundraisers goes directly to supporting cats from our community! This has been a particularly difficult year and we are most grateful for all the assistance and support. Go check out these businesses and give them some love.

This is O'Malley! A super sweet guy who absolutely loves humans and attention. He is the epitome of an orange boy. We absolutely adore him.

O'Malley is FIV positive, which means he has a compromised immune system but FIV cats can live long, normal lives with proper care. The virus cannot be transmitted to humans or other animals, and it primarily spreads between cats through deep bite wounds, not casual contact. Our own mascot Tom Tom is FIV postive and lives with our founder's FIV negative cats without issues.

We have three adults available for adoption with FIV. They are all very sweet and deserve forever homes. All come from the streets and have chosen to love humans.

Please visit our website, straytospay.org/adopt to find out more about our FIV kitties.

This picture is the perfect example of what happens without TNVR.

The sobering stats behind the image are these:

- In just five years, a single pair of un-fixed cats and their descendants can produce ELEVEN THOUSAND kittens.

- 30 to 40 million community cats already live outdoors in the US.

- 80% of kittens are born outside.

- 75 to 80% of those kittens never make it to adulthood due to starvation, disease, or injury.

- Feral cats live for only 2-3 years on average.

- In the past year, roughly 273,000 cats have been euthanized in shelters in the US. (This does not include cats who die on their own while in shelter care.)

- Of the hundreds of thousands of cat lives lost in shelters each year, about 60% of shelter deaths occur in kittens under 8 weeks old.

- Our cost to save a single kitten from the street, from the moment of rescue to adoption day, is about $200 - IF everything goes perfectly, with no health hiccups or special care.

If you were the one forced to euthanize kittens in shelters, would you be able to stand by and let cat overpopulation continue to happen?

If these cats were dying in your yard, would it matter to you then?

What if you were paying the rescue vet bills? Would stopping the birth of more kittens finally be a priority?

These are the issues we face every day, and the stats that compel us to keep going. We love cats... but we are tired of seeing pictures like this 💔
