Aner Shapira (22, left), a brave off-duty IDF soldier who was at the Nova Festival, showed extraordinary bravery on October 7, 2023, during the Hamas massacre in southern Israel.
As the terrorists launched the attack, Aner and others sought safety in a roadside shelter, known as the “shelter of death.” When the terrorists arrived, he took command of the shelter, guarding the entrance. Aner heroically threw back grenades hurled inside by the terrorist, saving lives.
Aner’s mother shared new details from an IDF report in interview with Israeli journalist Ilana Dayan, saying that he returned 10–11 grenades and, after being wounded by an RPG and losing a hand, was still able to throw back two more.
Aner and many others were murdered in the shelter that day. Four people were kidnapped and taken to Gaza: Eliya Cohen, Alon Ohel, and Or Levy were later released, while Hersh Goldberg-Polin (right), Aner’s childhood friend, was murdered in captivity. Hersh was later recovered by the IDF and returned to Israel.
May Aner’s memory forever be a blessing. 🕯️
